My 6-yr-old is finally "reading" on her own.
She turned six in December and knew all her ABC's and their sounds but we've been "slowly and steadily" working with making our reading more effortless and fluent.
Can I say "slowly", again? She's more active than my last reader and has little time for sitting still. This entailed sitting for about 15 minutes every day on the sofa, following with my finger under her text and waiting p.a.t.i.e.n.t.l.y. while she sounded out all the words.
Patience is a virtue! Patience is a virtue!
We also read over and over again Three Little Kittens by Paul Galdone and Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelson. She memorized these books and I'd have her read the words (from memory) while pointing to each word with her finger.
We also spent last month reading with the doctor: Dr. Seuss
Weekend before last I picked up Seton's easy first grade reader and each day we have sat on the sofa and she has read to me.
Today I got home from an eye dr. appt and she brandished the book jubilantly before me and proclaimed she had finished reading it to her big sister Kayleigh. She read it all by herself without any finger-pointers, rehearsals, or coaching.
Right now she is shuffling through our bookshelf in the living room and I hear her reading through all her sister's favorites, patiently sounding out words, and recognizing words, and reading ...all by herself.
I just had to share. It's a very rewarding day in the Gibson household.
Oh, and Annie wants you all to know she can blow bubbles with her gum too.

Cay, what a wonderful day for you! I had the same situation with my dd. She did not read early, but when she did read, she read in a big way!
Congratulations to you and to your wonderful example. You are an inspiration to us all!

What a happy day!!
My Annie struggled to learn to read, too, and it was such a delight when she "got it". My older dd had it all come so early and easily that the magic of it all was bypassed. I will always remember the journey with my second reader.
Congratulations to you both.
And that bubble gum blowing thing is something most of my gang is still working on!

That is fabulous news, Cay! Congrats to your youngest ... it can get stressful when mine aren't reading when I think they should and then I remember that in God's time all will be fine ....

My kids are snapping fingers all over the house ... because they know how.
Cay, I had one who began reading at eight! He was convinced that he couldn't do it until then. But when he started reading, his first book was Lafayette French American Hero! And he hasn't stopped reading since.
Congratulations, Annie!
