How old were your children when you first showed them Mary Poppins? How about Pollyanna? I have very sensitive girls (to sadness/intense situations, etc), and as such, we really haven't even done any Disney movies yet. I ran across these two at the library, though, and since it's been so long since I've watched them myself, I thought I'd see what any of you thought...

My 3 year old is pretty sensitive t scariness, and he didn't really have a problem with Mary Poppins. I think I'd do Pollyanna, too.
Though, his issue is the scary music and monster type things, which the music from either of those doesn't seem quite so sinister as the cartoons with witches, etc...
Though, I must admit that he watches the milder WWII movies with his dad (The Battle of Britain, Longest Day, etc...), and he isn't scared because the action isn't suspenseful--its the suspense that really frightens him. He gets pretty scared during some Thomas episodes, but I think he enjoys being scared by that (even though he's hiding under the table). Snow White, not so much. He wouldn't like that at all for the witch.
So all that to say that I consider him to be sensitive, and I would allow those two movies. Just wanted to explain (ramble?) so you could better guage if your girls were sensitive in the same way.

I think our oldest were about 6 and under. However, we watched Pollyanna last week and the almost 9 year-old boys, who watched Revenge of the Sith without flinching, covered their faces when she fell out of the tree even though they've seen it many times. We had to spend a few minutes explaining how the scene was shot to make everyone comfortable again.

My 4 year old sensitive child loves Mary Poppins ! The only part which is frightening is after they run away from the Bank but before Bert finds them. We usually fast forward through that part.

Can I just say- when I tell people our kids are too sensitive to watch Disney movies, I usually get incredulous stares.
You are just all so wonderful.

I get the same looks Sarah! Use the fast forward button if you need to, but don't feel bad about not bringing it into your home!!! I promise they won't suffer for it, and there's no taking it back if something scares them.

Sarah.....our girls sound sorta the same from other comments we've made about this. We haven't watched either. But, I would probably try watching Mary Poppins WITH them, as I'm sure they'd ask to FF parts of it, like Waverley's example.
I don't think I'd do Pollyanna....even if I was watching it too. The only Disney movie we've seen is Cinderella and I COULD NOT leave the room, and we ended up FF most of it. It was a gift that I had no control over and that was our first and last attempt.
Jennifer's right.....they won't suffer for it, certainly! and there is no taking it back if something scares them.

 Same here!
My kids can't even stand when someone yells at someone else in a movie. Oy. Yet they LOOOOOOVE "Mary Poppins." We haven't done "Pollyanna" though. But they certainly love Mary Poppins ... specifically, they love Bert. He's a fun, comforting, creative character. I think they think the movie should have been named "Bert."

My 5 year old is very sensitive and I really hesitate to bring Disney movies into my home because I was a sensitive child too and I can still recall certain Disney movies that scared me; Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Snow White, 101 Dalmations, The Three Little Pigs. I thought my daughter would get a kick out of Rescuers Down Under, but I forgot about the poacher who wants to kill the bird and the boy. Needless to say, Bernadette did not get through half that movie. Have you tried Summer Magic with your young children? That's my favorite Haley Mills flick.
