Any suggestions of what to do if your ds is opposed to unschooling? He first approached me about homeschooling but wants a curriculum plus nature studies to be our day.
I would be happy to read plenty, play games and use the computer for our school day. I tend to not enjoy nature but with ds it is hard to resist his passion for all things outdoors!! I mean one of my life's highlights was when ds first understood it was my b-day, decided to make me a present himself...he then brought me a big freshly dug worm!!

I'm assuming dh because that is more common....

Yes, DH does not want me to unschool.
Our son would just as well move the Gobi Desert and track dinosaur bones than sit down and do worksheets.

Marybeth,
Can you write an unschooling curriculum - and then keep a daily or weekly record of what you do? This way, the unschooling curriculum is your guide and dh's guide and the record keeping is proof of learning. At the same time, you and ds can meet your outdoor goals.

Maybe you've already seen this Stanford Magazine article -- my DH, who happens to be more unschooly than I am, often references it to show the value of unconventional learning experiences. The point of the article is that a custom-tailored homeschooling or even unschooling way of life can preserve and foster intellectual vitality which is a quality our nation can use more of. "Stanford has found that the brightest homeschoolers bring a mix of unusual experiences, special motivation and intellectual independence that makes them a good bet to flourish on the Farm."
Oh and to me, it sounds like you could get a lot of academic mileage out of books, computers and nature!

Marybeth, from what I saw, the "Unschooling Curriculum" would put some of us more CM purists to shame as far as planning goes I'll bet your hubby would appreciate reading through it. Just my .02, not worth much, but just a shot.

Thanks for all the links! We appreciate them. I think my dh having loved all his years in school and seeing how our friends homeschool can't quite "get" unschooling. I plan to print many articles for him to read and get more comfortable with the idea. I am reading Nancy Wallace's book at the moment which just blows my mind. Wow!!

hmm, my dh has zero tolerance for unschooling.
so we do much traditional.. and then let that be our spring board to other things.
for example, we like Seton's science 4. We studied weather in it. Now I've got a telescope, a weather station in the yard to monitor, guess that type of cloud being played in the car, some print offs from enchanted learning, and some Scouting information.
dh happy, mama happy, kids happy. not pure unschooling I guess, but it works for us.
