Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm not sure how to title this: I really like the Catholic Mosaic idea for providing a book list to correlate with the liturgical year. Is there a book like that to use with other subjects? (math, science, etc)

There is a series of books called MathStart by Stuart Murphy. They cover many aspect of elementary math with picture book stories. If you google Mathstart there is a website with a complete list of books by math topic. My library system has many of them.

My apologies for not seeing this earlier.

I'm a big fan of Five in a Row that covers all the subjects with great picture books. Though Catholic Mosaic was never intended to reinvent the wheel of picture book unit studies, it was my own spin-off project with picture books after having been thoroughly educated alongside my younger two girls with FIAR-picture books.

In a nutshell, it's a fun, relaxed, addictive way to learn.

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about FIAR! My dd just turned 4 on Sunday, would you suggest the FIAR or the before FIAR set? I don't want to do too much too soon.

I am a huge FIAR fan here! In my opinion, the Before FIAR books are TOO precious to miss! You can "beef up" any of those books by searching around and/or finding crafts to go with them.

That said, I did start on the FIAR books when my girls were 4 and they have done beautifully! We just love FIAR! Some of the titles are a little better for the younger crowd, and we have saved some for later...but I also go betwee volumes 1-3, so I have plenty to choose between.

HTH!

A 4 year old and a mother who doesn't want to do too much too soon.

Definitely "Before FIAR". For sure!

But I also agree with Candace. I began FIAR I with my middle daughter when she was 3-4 and she was reading by age 4 and doing wonderfully. She still loves books and I feel I owe most of that literary appreciation to FIAR.

But the Before FIAR books are precious and not to be dismissed. 4 is the perfect age for them.

Matter of fact---time for little story ---today we stopped at the library and my 6-yr-old-this-coming-Thursday jumped out of the car toting her new pink pocketbook (a b-day gift from a friend). In it was tons of "stuff" from the past two days, including a Wal-Mart receipt "just like Mommy gets".

And I made mention that her pocketbook was just like
The Big Green Pocketbook by Candice F. Ransom. Both my girls started talking exciting about the book and their favorite parts in it and all the things the little girl collected on her morning out with her mother. And Annie wanted the book in her hands right that minute.    The flood of memories weren't enough for her. She wanted to hold the book, see the pictures, and reread the book all over again.

Gotta love picture books!

I have to agree with Cay and Candace about FIAR. We have truly enjoyed it. I would start with Before FIAR. As Candace said, there are just too many good books in there to miss.

The key thing to remember is that you do not have to study the B4FIAR books in the order they are listed in the manual. We use the Catholic Mosaic (thanks Cay) as our base or spine and we study the B4 titles where they seem to fit with our Mosaic studies.

Hope this helps.

I saw that I can look at the book list on their order page. I might just order the FIAR vol 1 and then check out the books from the Before FIAR list as well, just for fun. I'm so exited about this but don't want to make my dd be a victim if I'm being over eager. So what is different with Vol 1, 2, and 3? Does it get more challenging?

I like the idea of lacing it with the Catholic Mosaic-which I am planning on ordering with Christmas gift money to be prepared for January. Does FIAR give ideas for crafts etc to be done with the books? Right now, I am going to try and create a love for learning using books and creativity (art, music, etc). I don't want to be on a 'schedule' but do want to have things prepared in a way to encourage 'spontaneous' learning and creativity. I'm know I'm only at the beginning, but I'm still very excited about this-thanks to all of you for such great inspiration!

Hi again!

There is no age difference or difficulty level difference between volumes 1, 2 and 3. I use them all interchangably!

Also, there are generally not a lot of craft ideas in the FIAR manuals. I have 2 young girls who are craft freaks, hee hee! They LOVE crafts, and that is even an understatement. Generally I will google the subject of what craft I want and find TONS online.

Also, there are FIAR message boards which are wonderful! They have archives (which I believe you can only access after posting 10 or so times) that have craft ideas listed there and other things that moms have done in the past with the books.

Not to overwhelm you, but on my blog I generally post all my crafts that we do. If you click on my link underneath my signature, then look at the categories on my sidebar, click on Five in a Row, and that will show pictures and all the ideas we have done in our home with FIAR. You can get a good picture of how it works in our house.

Hope this is helpful!!
Candace
