Back when A Dangerous Book for Boys came out, I remember there was a question posted about a girl version. I don't know if A Prairie Girl's Guide to Lifeexactly qualifies, but with all the Laura fans around here, it sounds like fun and full of lots of hands on projects like quilting, whittling, baking bread. I haven't seen the actual book, just read a review in our Sunday paper, so I can't tell you much more. I couldn't find it at Amazon either, so posted another link. The author, Jennifer Worick, has a blog, unfortunately I forgot to write it down and the paper went away in the recycle truck today  . I think it was on blogspot? Anyway, I thought there might be some out there who might enjoy it or know more.

Actually there is a book called Daring Book for Girls which looks to be the girl version of Dangerous Book. I haven't seen it yet, but I do have it on hold at the library...I just have to get over there.
Unfortunately the library doesn't have this Prairie Girl book...it looks good though!

we bought the darling book fo rgirls for our girls. now we have both lol. with strict instructions that they can NOT look in each others book. at least not yet. lol
I have one girl who is a tomboy and one who is all 'girl'. they both love it!

I must admit I didn't read it, but we saw the daring book for boys and bought it for dh's godsons, but when I looked at the daring book for girls, I was disappointed.
What had excited me about the boys book was that it celebrated the masculinity of boyhood--and how boys are somewhat unique in their desire for danger.
But, the girls book (which the publisher got someone else to write--not the people who made the boys book) seemed to be the politically correct way to provide the *same* thing for girls--not a celebration of femininity, yk?
It saddened me that yet again, the mainstream world continues to have such a problem with femininity. Why wouldn't they publish *The Girly Book for Girls* or something.
I am not discounting that some girls are tomboys and enjoy those things. I was my dad's helper in construction projects and watched WWII movies and Star Trek with him. My boys like to help me cook and set the table nicely. I'm not trying to judge anyone--only express my disappointment that they didn't take the opportunity to continue celebrating the *differences* between the sexes. Jmo.
ETA--The Prarie Book looks more like what I had in mind in a girl's book...

I just bought "The Original Girl's Handy Book" at Books-A-Million. I can't seem to find the "Tess Press" edition I bought anywheres online. It was only $9.99 at Bks-A-Million.
I was going to wrap it for my 10 year old for Christmas but I haven't been able to. It's been at my bedside, in my book bag, or on the passenger seat near me. 
I think we'll use it through the holidays rather than wrap it up. It's a book that begs to be used. What I see in it is very much a celebration of femininity.
It's sectioned into seasons and covers such topics as:
- First of April Party
- Wild Flowers and their Preservation
- The Walking Club (sure thing for our upcoming camping trip)
- May-Day games and crafts
- Midsummer Eve
- Sea-Side Cottage Decoration
- Printing from Nature's Type (we'll be doing this on our up-coming camping trip)
- Picnics, Burgoos, and Corn-Roasts
- Botany as Applied to Art
- Door-Step Party and Quiet Games
- Nature's Fall Decorations, and How to Use Them
- Nutting-Parties
- How to Paint in Water-Colors
- China Painting
- Home-Made Christmas Gifts
- Needle-Work
- What to do with Rubbish
- Homemade Candy
And so much more that I didn't list.

Cay when I went to Amazon they didn't have anything listed for "Original Girl's Handy Book" but they had American Girl's Handy Book by Lina Beard. Is that what you mean? My library didn't have the title you wrote but had this book by Beard (but with a different cover than the one on Amazon).
If it is "Originial" who is the author? What you listed sounds great! I'm hoping it's the one at the library, my Amazon wishlist is growing quite large

We gave this book to my daughter back in April for her b-day and she devoured it in one sitting. Now she's slowly perusing each chapter (and giving me details and snippets along the way) and has tried many of the plant and flower ides!! She desperately wants to have a seaside cottage so she can do all the decorating ideas from that chapter!!! You will not be disappointed in this one!

Cay, our library has an ancient edition of that book and I absolutely adore the Cottage Seaside Decorating!  Surprise, surprise!!! To me the book is like a guidebook to all L.M. Alcott's books, full of nutting parties and May Day baskets, the seaside stuff is straight out of Jack and Jill where they go to the seaside to convalesce and make a little beached skiff their homebase on the beach and decorate it with lovely shells and seaweeds and spend time painting and sketching there.
I might just have to get it out of the library again. It is that good.

I clicked on the cover (you can view the complete table of contents) and, yes, it's the same book. Different title. Perhaps they're wanting to venture away from people thinking it's just an American Girl Scout book. Mine has an orangy-brown cover and is a 2007 publication by Tess Press, but it is one and the same.
Nice, nice Victorian hand drawings throughout it.

Oh, Jennifer, I had no idea. This is great to know, Jennifer.  I'm even MORE excited about this book now.
I LOVE Alcott. Chels hasn't started into her yet. We did a couple years of Little House books with a dipping into Anne of Green Gables which took off to a couple years consumed with the American Girl series. This year it's all about Nancy Drew and Roald Dahl books.
I can't wait for her to "find" Alcott.
