I am interested in seeing how others are reacting to the Waldorf emphasis on rhythm. How has it affected your home? Have you made changes? What does your daily rhythm look like? What are your challenges in establishing and keeping rhythm? How do your kids react to the daily routine or to changes you are introducing? I don't know why, but it helps me to see what is working for others. Rebecca shared her routine so nicely in the earilier Waldorf thread, but I'd like more. I blogged a bit about ours here.

Thanks for posting this, I enjoyed reading your blog entry and would love to read more, as well. I've been thinking more about how to incorporate these ideas into our day.

I hestitate to post because we are pretty relaxed here, but we definitely have rhythms. I can't go by the clock, though. It stresses me out, and then my kids don't have a good day. We start our day with breakfast and then chores. Usually this happens around 8:00, but not always. After that we pray. We do a religion/catechism block daily. Then we have a main lesson block. After our main lesson block, we do lunch adn a short play break. After our play break, I read aloud to the kids while they just relax and listen. I ahve started giving them beeswax clay to work in their hands while they read. then the kids have some silent reading time. The younger kids jsut look at picture books, while the older kids read independently. After our reading time, we do handwork ( although we do this during our main lesson time also. My kids also like the extra handwork time in the afternoons) and violin practice. After this, I give them more free play time while I get dinner ready, although I usually have one or two that want to help. Right now our evenings are busy with soccer practice, volleyball practice, and violin lessons. I don't have a good rhythm for our eveings yet. I suspect that will come when our sports seasons have ended. We don't ordinarily do winter or spring sports. We still have a long way to go, but we're getting there, and we seem to cooperate better when we keep things in order. I'm interested to see what others are doing, too.

I should probably add that our Fridays are more relaxed than the rest of the week days. The kids have to do any corrections from the following four days' work(they keep any paperwork in a folder for grading, and sometimes there isn't much in there). Then they get more play time, and we do nature walks and thank you notes on Fridays, as well as other creative writing activities. We just fon't really have a set way friday goes. For us, it works, and dh likes to see the weeks' workwith corrections. He still isn't sure about some of this that we are doing, so it's a compromise. The kids seem to like it, and it works for now.

I just blogged about my thoughts on rhythm. My kids are still too little to say much about fitting in curriculum and such.

But what a great time to lay down good rhythms Susan. I haven't read it for years, but I know that when I read You Are Your Child's First Teacher (I can't vouch for all the content) when I was a younger mother  it really impressed on me a need for a flow to our days (at that time I just had a VERY easy little boy.... life changed with the other 3 ).
