Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

With the recent bit of discussions about Waldorf, one thing that hasn't been addressed is story-telling. From my little bit of Waldorf knowledge, story-telling is a big piece -- both for the parent/teacher and the students.

Well, we have just the game for you to help hone your story-telling skills -- as a matter fact JP and I played this morning while the other two lanquished in bed with colds .... Varialand from Selecta is a German game that doesn't have any rules, words, etc. So ALL ages can play. The tiles are 2x2 pictures -- however you put them together is up to you. Then you tell the story. The scene is very cute and always changing because you can use as few or as many tiles as you'd like.

It's really a great game to get the story-telling skills sharpened.

Anyone else have any story-telling ideas?

This morning, my guys were entertained by my story-telling. It started out as just one short story, so they could understand Aesop better, but then they each wanted their own story... These are by no means amazing literary works, but we were all giggling all over the living room floor over our version of Aesop.

I think for our next Aesop tale, I'm going to make them tell a story using Aesop as a model.

I am currently using Rainbow Book for Fairy Tales. I basically try to memorize them. The Four-Year-Old ones are fairly easy because they are so repetitive. I might tell a tale while sketching/molding/painting out the characters. These are very rough; I'm no artist. However, my children love them. I find that after memorizing a few of these tales, I am better at telling tales about our personal memories. It's like how CM advocates copywork, only this is for storytelling. I've also found that if the order of the story is important to a child like the Pig Sheep and the Pig I have my characters lined up in order before starting the story. It helps jog my memory. In this particular story we just used whatever animal models we had around. If models are not easily found, I usually sketch them out of construction paper. Then I can either lay them out on the floor similar to those felt story props. Or if the children ask, glue them to popsicle sticks. Well gotta run. My kids are putting up a play for me with some of our homemade puppets. *grinz*

Funny you should ask. I rarely tell stories on my own, usually relying on books to do the telling for me. But today I wanted to tell the Chinese story of the Moon Lady and couldn't find the link to the online story I'd seen yesterday.
Luckily I remembered it well enough to tell it myself. As I told it I also painted a picture of the moon lady.

Don't laugh, watercolor is HARD for me!
But it really captured the children's imaginations and got them excited about the moon and the Moon Festival and our Asia studies. Then we read the Amy Tan book "The Moon Lady," which has beautiful illustrations (including one from which I got the idea for my picture) and the kids painted moon pictures, too.
Very good start to a very good day.

Laugh---I'm spellbound...she's gorgeous. Thanks so much for sharing her. We are going to read Chinese Fairy Tales in October...maybe she can come play at our house, although I know my version won't be as pretty.
