Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My children have become very interested in animals, and I would like to have more choices around. I have agonized over the Toobs by Safari Ltd as well as the Scheiler? brand, and as I am trying to avoid both plastic AND things made in China, I've finally decided that I would rather add a few wooden things gradually than get a whole bunch all at once.

So, herein lies my dilemma. If I am going to "collect" I want them to "match" (call me crazy) and I am trying to choose between the Holztiger and Ostheimer

I find them both beautiful. The Holztiger is a bit more realistic and "fun" looking, and the Ostheimer is more whimsical and Waldorf-y. I see this first $12 I spend on a single figure as a long term investment of sorts (at 1-2 at a time, it will take us years to build the collection), lol, and I want to make the best choice. Help me out please!

No experience here -- but they both look awesome. If I had to choose the Ostheimer looked neater (but I think that was because of the knights on the first page).

Oh, those Ostheimer ones look awesome to me! Are they available here in the US?

Both are available in the US, but I posted the German sites because they show all of the toys available. Just google Ostheimer and lots of great sites come up (The Wooden Wagon, Nova Naturals, and Dandelion Summers come to mind)

For what it's worth, we had some Holztiger figures, and they are beautiful. Smooth as silk; just lovely! BTW, we had hippos

I had to look at ours to see what they are, and each one I checked said "Kinderkram." I believe we got them (or most of them) through Nova Natural.

You can see some of them in Nature Play and Stories.

We love wooden toys!

I prefer the Ostheimers, too! They're beautiful.

We've got a German set made by 'Toys pure'. They were given as a present but I also found them here. Surprisingly inexpensive!

Spielform                http://www.spielform.de/indexl.asp

We have many animals and people figures from Spielform. But I don't know if there is a rep. in America.

I've seen them both "up close and personal" in Germany. The Ostheimer are definately nicer. I was hoping to buy some things like this over there but with the dollar vs. euro and their tax, it is much cheaper to order from websites here!

FYI I splurged and ordered a nativity pyramid from the Wooden Wagon last year for xmas. The service was very good and fast . Your post inspired me to click into them again. Now I'm drooling over the "birthday rings"--!! They had some sets of wooden painted animals here that looked quite nice, you get several animals per set for around $50, then below some sets that have several smaller animals in a round box for around $25. They look gorgeous, but maybe a bit fragile--?

My kids have loved and played with the playmobil sets for years. Well made in Germany, though plastic . We have the Noah's Ark and a Farm set. But then we are playmobil fanatics!

Angela -- we're getting to be big Playmobil fans here (thanks to MaryM!). But, your posting of the Wooden Wagon site is going to be dangerous for my budget, yet again....I've GOT to stop checking interesting posts.

LOL, Mary G, for some reason I'm starting to think we're attracted to the same kinds of posts -- you know, the shopping ones?

I just did a quick Google search and found a site that has a Ostheimer Collectors Club. Get a $5 gift certificate just for signing up!

Thanks ladies! I was leaning towards Holztiger, but all the Ostheimer votes are compelling. Off to check out the collector's club. It might push me over the edge, lol. I did like the spielform, but I couldn't find a us distributor. Maybe I should become one so I can get cheap toys All the other links are beautiful, too.
