I am thinking this is what I will have DS(just turned 6) do. Any ideas? I have CHC's Little Letters and Numbers book, but don't want him just sitting there tracing-he will want much, much more!
Thanks a bunch for any ideas or...links!

All of mine have made their own alphabet binders. My four and six year olds are working on theirs together this year. The first page for the letter is the upper and lower case written on construction paper and then rice or beans or something glued over it. The second page is that letter cut from magazine pages and glued into a collage. Then we do some "A is for" pages for each letter...a couple that are fun crafts...A is for apple (apple prints), A is for astronauts (foil astronauts), A is for animals (animal collage). The last page is A is for...and the names of people in our family and saints(Aunt Marcie, Addison, St. Augustine, St. Anne, etc...) Each letter takes about a week and I take my time and let them enjoy it. If I get the time in the next few days, I'll try to post a complete list of page ideas on my blog. I'll let you know if I get it up.

I did this with my older kids. They *still* giggle and have heartfelt memories about their books.
Enjoy!

We are going to do one of Washington DC based on a book called Washington DC from A-Z. It's going to be a scrapbook with pictures of our field trips, narrations, the recipe for Laura Bush's cowboy cookies... That will be for all the kids to do together with me.
Charles has one with sandpaper letters glued in (we did together), stickers for words with the sound somewhere in it--like "flower" for "w", some pictures. Vowels are in felt. We plan to add all the phonograms from Sound Beginnings, and when he wants to do school, we go through the book together tracing the letters and practicing the sounds.

Oooooo. I *never* thought of that (sandpaper, vowels in felt). I love it!

With each of my children, I got old magazines from the library or from relatives. I made sure there was nothing objectionable in them. Then I had the children look for something that started with each letter of the alphabet and glue it into a book that they made. This is one of my favorite projects. I don't save much of my children's work, but I do save this one.

Anyone else want to add some alphabet book ideas to the list I've been posting? Maybe we can work through the alphabet together? Let me know if you're interested and we can work out getting it together!

We basically do it the way Patty mentioned, adding that we have them write the letters, upper and lower case, as well as put in pictures of things that start with that letter.
We ALSO have made a combination scrapbook/alphabet book---sort of akin to Rachel's idea---where we collected postcards and brochures from places we visited and put THEM in the appropriate spot...ie "Seven Mile Bridge" (in the Keys) under "S". When we were doing this Florida Keys scrapbook/alphabet book, we also did lots of pictures of sea life that we learned about while we were there---eg we drew pictures of Manta Rays and put them under "M" (and labeled them-part of the exercise---if the child has problems with that, I write the name in highlighter and let them trace the highlighted letters). We even got really creative and went wild with Florida Keys birds and Audobon----got a book of Audobon birds and spent a lot of time copying his bird pictures ("F" is for Flamingo)...so we combined phonics, science, geography and even art into this one humble project. As others have mentioned, my dc really treasure their letter books!

Hi Ladies!
I am so sorry I haven't posted back yet! Thankyou all so much for your bright, creative, and fun ideas! Colleen, your blog was very helpful! Great ideas..I kinda copied a few of them!
Not sure how/what you all use for a binder/holder, I just got a three-ring binder that DS picked out at Walgreens, page protectors, and folder dividers so we can write "Aa","Bb""Cc",etc. on each dividing tab.
For our "A" week, DS glued beans to make a capital A and lowercase a. Then I had him trace over the letter A from a copied page of our CHC book. Next we did the apple prints(red delicious worked best! ), painted an apartment building, and the biggest hit was the astronaut idea!
For "Bb" this week, he will glue beads to form the letter B and b,copy the letters from our CHC page, then I am giving him choices of crafty ideas to paste on that start with the letter B. He can pick at least three:
Glue buttons on to construction paper.
Cut out pictures of Bibles from some catalogs and paste on to paper.
Cover a page with stickers from his numerous ball-stickers collection.
Have him form the letters B and b out of golf-balls,take a photo, then have him paste it on a page.
Paste unblown-up(?) balloons on a page.
Paste wrappers of bubble-gum on to a page.
Tomorrow I will start thinking about C.
That's it for now!

We've just begun an alphabet book as well. I'll post as we go, Colleen. Our pages will be similar to these. I'm trying to morph from both the Christopherus First Grade syllabus (which has lots of good ideas) and Oak Meadow's Kindergarten syllabus (more good ideas). And I'm adding in a dash of Kim's Friday Funschool. So far, I have lots of good ideas and no clear vision but I'm tinkering with it and we'll get there! I think I'll do one kind of book with my little ones and a different kind with my first-grader (who can read already but is still going to make one of these).
Oh, and my box of Alphabet Cookie Cutters arrived Friday !

Those are wonderful resources Elizabeth!Thankyou! I am ordering that Alphabet cookie cutter set!
I had another idea for the letter B. I am going to add making a bookmark(then laminating it) to the choices. One he can include in his book, the others we can use as a family.
For C, I've decided he will glue unpopped corn to form the letters. Still gathering/brainstorming ideas for the rest.

We finished our A activities this week...surprisingly, my boys loved making that little altar the most! The astronaut was a hit with the 4yo, but my 6yo decided he liked aliens better and colored his whole page with frightening green faces , then made me scratch out A is for ASTRONAUT and replace it with A is for ALIENS...he's always waltzed to his own music, KWIM . Anyway, it's really been fun for us, and we do it during the 9yo history notebooking time, so he is right there at the table but doing his own thing and while the toddler and baby are napping, so I really do get to focus on just tose two kiddos, and they are really getting a lot out of that time. I hope between all of us we can keep posting and inspiring each other on this project, it's so worthwhile, I really don't want to lost focus or burn-out, so pleeease stick with me girls, and keep posting inspiration!

I got these. They are three inches, I think. We made grilled cheese "Bs" for lunch.
