Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a friend from one of the parishes we attend who is considering homeschooling her children this upcoming year. She has.....

3 boys: 6th, 4th, 1st grade. They have been in the Catholic parish school since the beginning.

2 girls: age 4, 6 months.

She is asking for resources.
(keep in mind this is all relatively new to her)

What book would you recommend?
Websites to familiarize?
Things to do / not do.
Advice?

Of course, she should come here ......
....and read Elizabeht's book

It depends somewhat on your state requirements and how much confidence the mom has to homeschool. She doesn't have much time to research and plan if she wants to follow a traditional school year.

I would suggest using CHC for all grades to begin with.

The plans for the 6th grade will take more time for her but the rest is all laid out, simple but structured. The cost is not high compared to what they must have been paying at a parish school.

Once she has her books and lesson plans, she can ask specific questions as they come up.

She could also just start with read alouds, nature walks and some projects. Then each month build in another more formal subject.

What an exciting thing! Homeschooling is a great gift!

I agree totally with Bridget. Start off with CHC and read Real Learning. She can gradually wean herself off of the pre-planned things as she gains confidence, if she likes.

Thanks Bridget and Theresa. I'm bringing Real Learning to her on Sunday and sent the CHC link to her.

She wrote in one of her emails the other day:

"No one wants to be away from each other."

Isn't that sweet??? I just about burst into tears when I read that. Those three little boys (and one not so little) wanting to be around their siblings and parents!!!
