Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I usually steal others' ideas, so for me to have one jump in my head is abnormal. This may be someone else's idea that I just never read, who knows???

Anyway, this morning, I was thinking about how I could make learning composers/music, and artists/art more fun this year, and how I could also document it. I want something a bit different.

This idea came to my mind, but can be used for composers, artists, authors, presidents, women in history, signers of the Declaration of Independence, popes, saints, Apostles, sports figures, whatever you might want when studying people.

Brainstorming here...

I think I'm going to use index cards (vertically), or cut card stock (not sure which), and make index card TRADING CARDS for people we're studying in a particular subject.

I think we'll put the title on top of the front like ARTIST or AUTHOR for example), find a picture of the person to paste on the front (from the internet most likely), label their name underneath, then who they are, like (42nd PRESIDENT OF THE U.S. or IMPRESSIONIST or whatever),and then put their stats on the back of the card.

When trying to figure out how I could document this in a notebook, seeing as we'll be using both the front and the back, I decided they could be kept in a recipe box, OR if I want them in a notebook, we could put them in clear sheet protectors, so both sides could be seen.

If anyone wants to build further on this idea, please do! I just thought it'd be neat to learn about people, and discuss more in depth about them, but to document in a short, easy, fun way what we've learned, so that everything's not such a *project*. I also thought it'd be fun to do it in a way we haven't used before, and to make it something we could build upon (add to) through the years if we wanted to.

I just don't want to make it complicated, as I tend to do, but have this be something simple, but also that highlights the people we're studying to make them *important* as trading cards do, and thought this would be a neat way to do that.

Either the recipe box or the sheet protectors could be organized like a timeline very easily too! What a neat idea, Tracy.

My 11 year old daughter was reading over my shoulder this morning and said. " That IS a good idea."
It does seem like a simple way to highlight the major facts.

I'd probably go with the blank index cards as it would be easier - ready to go.

Maybe they could be color coded by topic (HISTORY, ART, MUSIC, SCIENCE), too. USe a different color card for each major topic.

This is EXACTLY what I was hoping would happen. It's GREAT to work with all of you ladies on this site. What incredible and creative homeschool moms you all are!!! Keep the brainstorming coming!!!

And Mary, from your 11yo daughter, I take that as a huge compliment! I'm glad she likes the idea.

What a neat idea - and considering I've gone totally laminator happy since buying one last week, I have a feeling I'll be doing this and laminating them! Thank you so much for sharing your idea!

Wonderful idea! For storing them they make those clear plastic card pages for notebooks. I think they hold 9 or 12 per page and you could see front and back that way.

Great idea! At Target right now in the dollar spot they have "decks of cards" with all sorts of topics- solar system, dinosaurs, states, and US presidents. The pictures of the presidents are on the front, and their vital info is on the back.
