Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello,

This is my first year hs and I am learning much. I found many Catholic HS sites which are more into classical learning. I am drawn to CM but also unit studies ... how would you recommend I combine them successfully?

Another question ... can CM be used well in a Catholic home? I have questioned other HS in my town and they try to talk me out of using CM.

FYI: I have a 8yo boy (and a 5mo baby)who is reading but not without a struggle.

Thank you!

Marie

I am not a CM purist.
This is what I take from CM: copy work,
short lessons, and read aloud with narration.
We also do unit studies and put them in a lap book but I could not think of a way to include narrations. I gleamed from Elizabeth a great idea, now I use the folded book fold from BBOB.
As for using CM in a Catholic home, Elizabeth wrote a great book on that .

Where in California are you?

I second Elizabeth's book (Real Learning: Education in the Heart of the Home) as a great resource for Catholicizing CM. Also check out the Lenten Copywork thread and the Easter Vigil thread. Alice has given us a beautiful example of combining CM's ideas and our Liturgical Year. Elizabeth has given us great examples too, for the Advent and Christmas seasons. A Tomie dePaola unit can be found at her website www.4reallearning.com, and she did a St. Nicholas study too. Maybe she can upload that to the Rabbit Trails forum...

The above suggestions are great examples of incorporating Unit Study and CM. FIAR (which in your intro you mentioned using) is also a great example of unit study. To make it more Catholic and CM, use short lessons, living chapter book read alouds that tie into your theme (there's a great list divided by topic/author at Elizabeth's website and also in the back of her book), and study the saints and liturgical year along the way. Again, several people have previously posted specific "Catholicized" FIAR plans. I will check into uploading those files to the Rabbit Trails forum.
