Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi,
I pulled my son out of the fourth grade in our local catholic school this past April. He was the only boy in his (very small) class, and there were a lot of social issues/problems going on. He is very bright, and also quite imaginative. When I pulled him out it was rather sudden (I had been hoping to finish out the school year for him), so I was scrambling to figure out what to do. He had already covered most of the math and grammar for the school year, so the pressure was really off. We didn't do a heck of a lot, actually - I wanted him to have some time to decompress, and time for me to think about what I wanted to do.

After a lot of research and reading, I've decided that I'm leaning toward both classical and Charlotte Mason type learning. I ordered the MODG syllabus for fifth grade to sort of use as a guideline, because I do kind of like a lot of what is in there, but I'm wondering how I can combine the more structured classical type stuff with the stuff I love about CM, like notebooking, nature study, etc.

I'm sure some of you ladies can point me in the right direction on this!

Thanks!

We used MODG for 5th grade with the syllabus and did it very loosely. We did the Balt. Catechism but very slowly. We read aloud saint books. There are so many ideas for living the liturgical year from this forum! We did lots of the history readings together from the syllabus.   In science, we did not use Concepts and Challenges very much. We did lots of reading e.g. physical science with projects. We used
The Way Things Work by David Macaulay(which you could get at your library)9 weeks of earth science, 9 weeks of biology,9weeks of physical science, We did the 8 weeks of chemistry in Concepts and Challenges.
We did Saxon 65 for Math
Easy Grammar 56(to be stretched out for grade 5 and 6)
Narrations from History, Religion, or Science.
Paragraph writing. I gave Topic sentence and he gave me 5 supporting sentences.
Dictation
Spelling(his weak area) Sequential Spelling (from Sonlight)

Hope this helps and God bless.

Anne,
MODG=Mother of Divine Grace, which is a catholic, classically based curriculum and school. You can actually enroll in the school, or just buy the syllabus and follow it as much or as little as you like (which is what I am doing). Their website has lots of info and book lists on it. Hope that helps,
