Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 13 yr old daughter wants to make her own blog. I'm not sure if that's a good idea, for security reasons. She was very unmotivated last year, especially in writing. If I do let her have a blog, should I insist on checking what she writes for grammatical errors as well as content? (grammar is not one of her strengths) I'm pretty she won't agree that my checking her writing is a good idea!
I"m wondering how many of you have student bloggers, and do you consider it part of their schoolwork?

My almost-18-year-old son has a My Space, and my almost 8-year-old daughter has a blog on homeschool blogger.com.

For my 18-year-old, I read his MySpace and then I would let him know if there were some misspellings or other errors.

I like letting them have a place to be creative and to write. But then I'm a blogger and I love having that kind of creativity as well.

I do count my daughter's blog as a documentation of
her school work.

Her Blog is here.

My dd13 also doesn't enjoy writing. I had suggested a blog to her but she wasn't interested. So when she came to me months later and said she was I jumped at the opportunity    In my honest opinion I would NOT check it for grammatical mistakes, with a fledging writer such as this you do not want to kill any enthusiasm you need to tread very carefully. I hope I don't offend here but I'm am writing as one mother to another of dd's who need careful handling in the area of writing.

Content mmm... well once dd set up her blog and enjoyed mastering the layout (which I thought was wonderful learning in the information technology area ) she has then struggled with ideas of what to write about    I make suggestions and she rejects them all She mainly has posted stories she has written (so you would understand me when I say she has only three posts)

Although I would easily see a blog as writing so therfore is easily legitimate as schoolwork I would treat it differently. The writing is an expression of thoughts etc it is her thinking space in a way, it may take a form of journal type or something else like where my dd is at present, in dd's case I believe she is not yet comfortable in expressing herself in an open way. So I would do nothing but say ENCOURAGING remarks. Even if her spelling makes you cringe say NOTHING. Just find the positives and comment on them. I have found though that the actual fact of it being a published form dd has made an unprecedented effort to have it 'perfect'

I have no issue with the'privacy' sort of things with my dc it is just a given at this age that we may be walking past and read their emails or blog posting. Dd13 btw is my oldest so I am new in that area.

Regards security, we have used blogger and used to option of it being a private blog. Dd in fact has not even told any of her friends she has a blog, she is very private. But I would be okay with her telling her friends if she wished to. We were careful with what name she choose and the email address, I wanted nothing with our surname. I have discussed internet security with dd and stressed the need that our name, phone number, town etc is not known on the internet. Oh and I'm not comfortable with personal photos yet, I may in time be. These are sensible precautions for children today to know. Other than that I have no problem with dd blogging. I think it wonderful, if only we can get back into her blog (we cannot sign in somehow, we seem to have lost the option on our management section...any other blogspot folks who could help here? )

First of all, ditto everything Erin said. A blog is a journal. Journals are encouraged in school, but they are intended for easing the flow of thought on paper, not for grammatical accuracy. If you want her to self-correct, ask her to read it aloud. Many grammatical errors can be caught by the writer if she reads aloud what she has written. But leave the correcting to the writer.

My 13 yos wants to start a blog and to ensure that he is serious, I am having him journal on WORD (another bonus is that WORD notes blatant errors in grammar and spelling) for a time. Having a second Typepad account costs, and I don't want this to be a fleeting interest.

And Erin, the same thing happened with my Blogspot blog. I am now an avid Typepad user.
