Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have not yet read thee Original series however I have read A Charlotte Mason Companion and Charlotte Mason Education. My question is what is Sol-fa as referred to in Charlotte Mason Education?

Darlene, Sol Fa is what we call solfege. It is sight singing using the Do re me fa sol la si do syllables, as the kids did in the Sound of Music.

Kodaly/Curwin method also teaches hand signs for each of the syllables, and I have found this particularly effective:
Hand Signs

It takes a while to learn.    Alan Jemison music has a nice sight-singing tape set for Catholic kids called "Sing Praise to God by Note".

Using the hand signs while singing (sight reading) is so helpful! In high school, we had a very good choir director who required us to use hand signs whenever we were learning a new piece of music. We sight read for practice almost every day too.

Macbeth, do you use this just for singing practice or is it in some way tied to the music they are studying with their instruments?

I was never taught to sing and cannot carry a tune. Is this something we could use in our home?

Thanks for the question, Darlene!

This would be a great place to ask about any other terms or CM vocabulary that is not familiar to us. Please feel free to ask here and please respond if you know any answers.
