What practical tips can you give on how you all organize your homes so that the living books are in the right place to be found? I have SOOOOO many good books but they are all just filed in the living room bookcases or baskets around the house. So many are stuffed there that I have forgotten what I have! Help! Where to start?
Thanks,
Kim

I have all of *my* books in the office. These are all my how-to-homeschool books, liturgical year books, etc. I also have all my gardening, cooking, and magazines on these shelves.
All the other books are in the learning room, in 2 different bookcases. One bookcase all the Catholic Mosaic books on one shelf, and all other picture books on the other shelves. Those are arranged by subject.
The other bookcase has all the *research* books, like encyclopedias, nature study books, science experiments, etc. Again, they are all arranged by subject.
Lastly, I have an immense database of every book we own, including where the book should be shelved.

Now, see, that would be a fun honeymoon. I'm not sure if Eric would agree -- he wants to go to fishing in Alaska.

I have NO system now, but I'm looking forward to moving so I can get a system in place. My plan is to put all the bookshelves in one room. Then I will unpack one box of books at a time, enter them into Readerware and shelved them in some semblance of order. I'm ok with books leaving the "library" to go and be read in other rooms, but I want one central staging area for all books.
In this house we have bookshelves upstairs and down, and I feel like I'm always carrying books up and down to put them away. It drives me crazy.

We have living history books alphabetized by author's last name in 3 bookshelves at the top of the stairs on the landing.
Living room has a bookshelf with all of "my" books - Catholic reference, the Bible, saints bio's, gardening books, favorite parenting books - on top two shelves. Bottom two shelves (accessible to the kids) contain music books, American Handy Boy and Girl books, and a (rotated) set of favorite read-aloud picture books. All of my Catholic Mosaic Books are in here too since we read those all together on the couch in here. The bottom cupboard (accessible to the 2yo) contains all of the board books.
Learning room has a total of 20 shelf surfaces. These are mounted on the wall on an adjustable track system (thanks to dh.) This allows all floor space to be freed up for Montessori shelves along the floor. Top shelves (which are quite high) are used to store curriculum that is not being used at this time. Reachable shelves are organized by subject matter -
*one shelf for my materials and resources,
*one shelf for nature books and animal books,
*one shelf is a dedicated nature shelf for the nature collection,
*one shelf contains paper (color, cardstock, writing) and has organizing folders for school records,
*one shelf is dedicated to correspondence (holy cards, pretty papers)
*one shelf contains plastic bins of different colors - each child gets their own bin for holding their materials and books for the year (note: I don't keep living history books in the learning room because of space, I bring them to the shelf one quarter at a time)
*one shelf is for math manipulatives
*one shelf is for puzzles
*one shelf is for art appreciation books
*one shelf is for science materials
I have a large cupboard in the learning room that contains art supplies, cd player, copier and more paper, coloring books, general school supplies
