Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've always thought that collections are a great way for children to learn organizational skills, and to really dig into a subject, or simply allow someone to have a whimsical interest. That started me thinking about what---if anything---do we collect?

One of my brothers has a (don't laugh) barbed wire collection. Really! He also collects and restores Gravely Tractors. This is a very erudite guy, which makes it all the funnier. Another brother, a corporate lawyer, no less, collects...Funny Names! He actually keeps a file of clippings about funny or unusual names. On a more traditional note, my dh has a rock collection, and collects old bonds. I collect icons and santos. Several of my children collect coins. One of my dd's has a very informal rock collection (not labeled or anything). Then there's the ds who collects bottle caps and another who collects dinosaur cards. My little girls haven't started collecting anything yet, but won't it be interesting when they do?

So, what do your children collect? How organized are your collections, and do you use these enthusiasms in their schoolwork???

Rocks! We have had to implement the rule to keep them outside b/c they taking over the house. Ds loves loves dinosaurs so we have been talking about rocks in conjunction with the earth and fossils. I never had a collection so it is fun for me too.

Katie collects snow globes. My mom started bringing them home for her whenever they traveled and now we have started getting them on our travels. She has quite a lot now.

My boys collect LOTR figures... pricey, but that's what they get for birthdays, Christmas, learning Latin vocabulary perfectly for twelve weeks in a row...ditto with Religion Memory Questions. My parents convinced them to save the boxes, too; they said they're going to be worth alot of money one day. (They watch too much Antique Roadshow.)

They also collect stamps. I used to be a rural carrier and I don't mind helping out the postal service. That's got to be one of the hardest jobs around... physically, mentally, and emotionally... I never would have thought... don't forget to thank your mail man! (And pray for him, too.)

We have been collecting everything we can find lately-sticks, rocks, bugs, empty water bottles....my car looks terrible!

I never collected anything growing up so this has been fun for me too!
