Ever since Science Songs thread when we viewed and listened to these several times:

My almost 7 year old wants to learn more about the periodic table. He wants to know what the initials mean, what each element does, and what does it do when it's paired up with other elements.

That wasn't in our plan for 2nd grade science, and I know he just wants to understand a little more of an overview.

So, anyone have recommendations of picture books or easy to understand introduction or highlights of the Periodic table for this age?

A fun place to start with the periodic table is with the free picture version at this site elements.wlonk.com

My six and eight year old daughters really liked this book Periodic table with style

We spent a fair amount of time discussing why the artist choose to draw the elements as he did (for example sodium is drawn in a beaker under a liquid)

There's a more general book on chemistry due to be released as well.

That's a neat periodic table. Thanks.

There are many different interactive periodic tables online, where you click on the element and it takes you to a page with lots of info on that element - answers the kind of questions he was asking about.

This book is one our favorites for elements. It doesn't cover every one, but does the major ones and talks about the different groups. It is geared to the 8+ crowd so good for young. Really fun experiments and explanations.

And I recently found this site that has a listing/link of comics that feature each element. Somebody had WAY too much time on their hands

but I though it was cool. Periodic Table of Comic Books

I saw The Mystery of the Period Table (Living History Library) on a booklist somewhere, and it looks pretty interesting.

Oooh, thanks for all the suggestions. My library has Periodic Table with Style and Fizz... and my sister loaned the Mystery of the Periodic Table. Ekbell, that site is fabulous! I cannot wait to print it out!

I drool over the items at this site. (Periodictable.com)

I've seen other "playing cards" with the elements on them, but this one has photographs of all that they can get photos of.... And I just can't wait to see any of the other products in my hands. Just to explore them. They look SO beautiful!

Has anyone used any of these items yet? I can't imagine the items would be too old for a younger child - at least to be exposed to it, if not using everything exactly as intended.... after all, what's homeschooling for?

I once had a link to online videos for each periodic element. Can anyone help me? I'm afraid that is all I can recall, they were recommended as very interesting.

Oh, Erin! We loved that link! I grabbed it off your blog as soon as you posted and my kids watch 2 - 3 elements each day last term! The videos are fantastic and done by the University of Nottingham -- The Periodic Table of Videos. Fantastic resource!! I'm so glad you shared it initially...and I'm HAPPY to relink it for you!

It was on your learning blog...but I don't think it was in a post, Erin. I remember it being on your sidebar...in your shared items I think?? I remember reading a term wrap-up post of yours, but I just looked through your archives and searched your blog and can't find the link in a post, so you must have just seen it somewhere and added it to your shared items and I saw it and clicked through.

Glad you've rediscovered it!!!!

We are HOOKED on it! The kids are so THRILLED when they demonstrate various chemical reactions - and they love the out-takes, too!! It really makes the periodic table of elements come alive and seem *REAL*!!!

I wanted to add a new elements book my son is just loving:

Scholastic Discover More: The Elements by Dan Green

It's jam packed with gorgeous photos and lots of information that pertains to real life (applied knowledge), and lots of interesting historical information. My son is chatting up a storm that Vincent Van Gogh went mad for Paris Green and literally went mad and sick probably because it had arsenic. And Lincoln had mercury poisoning, so he would have died from that, and Beethoven probably died from lead poisoning....

And my iPhone touchscreen has indium....

It's even more exciting than a DK book, but it's a similar format.

Our other favorite which we started reading 3 years ago:

The Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe by Theodore Gray. Another eye-popping book with loads of photographs and information, but less bits of historical information.

The Scholastic book has similar type photographs, I would look for it in your library. Your son will LOVE it!
