Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are planning to do a lot of nature study and outdoor sketching/painting this fall. We have Michele's nature notebooks and some good quality watercolor and sketch pads. I am just not sure what art materials to take in backpacks - the kids who would be using them would be 10 and 8 and 3.

Please share what you have in your nature backpacks.

Maybe I should crosspost this in the art forum.

"In the field" we use watercolour pencil crayons, then the kids can 'wash' them if they want to when we get home.

Everyone brings pencils, then I bring my nice watercolors in tubes (they are in a box, so easily portable). I also pack empty yogurt cups with lids for everyone. The cup side is for water from where ever we are (river, stream, ocean, water fountain, water bottle) and the lid part is where I squeeze at bit of paint. They request color, I choose amounts (they can always come back for more). If there is no place to wash up after wards, the cups get emptied onto the ground and the lids snap on top, the brushes get swished then ziploc bagged and we clean everything up at home.

We have a couple of these Cotman pan sets. We also take colored pencils or watercolor pencils.

We take a set of watercolor pencils and a tiny paintbrush that fits right alongside the pencils in the tin so we're always ready to roll!

I had recently posted a question about watercolors and had some answers from Gwen and MaryM.

I really like the idea of a water brush.

I'm going to ask a really fundamental question regarding watercolor pencils. Do you wet the pencil and color the paper, or do you color with it dry, and then add water to the brush and brush the page, or do you take the brush with water, cover it with color from the pencil and then go to the page?

I tried all three, each has a different look...but I really wanted to know what is the main way people use the pencils.

Generally you would color with the pencils - dry on dry paper. Then using a wet brush, wet and blend the pigment on the paper to achieve the watercolor look. I never thought to try the other various options you tried, but could see how it would produce different effects, so really any or all ways could work.

When we are out, we use dry pencils on dry paper, then the kids sometimes choose to 'wash' it with a wet brush when we get home.

When we are just playing around at home, we will sometimes dip the pencils (the colours are so vibrant!) and experiment with blending.

Marilyn,

Here is a post I did last fall about our nature bag. (Faster than writing it out - it is lunch time here) It has links to a neat set of nesting watercolors that my mom gave us. They are compact and very good. We also use both Derwent watercolor pencils and regular colored pencils too.

Thank you for the wonderful ideas everyone.

Marjorie - I love your blog post. You have inspired me - the kids have packed backpacks and we have put them in the trunk with our boots - so we are prepared for nature study at all times! Hopefully it will cool down soon so we can get out there. (OT - my first time on your blog - loved it. I am a francophile too - never met anyone else in the US who listens to Brel or Brassens - I found my old cassette tapes and listened to them yesterday with some Piaf too - and a bit of French lemon tart and cafe au lait of course)

I am going to budget for some Derwent watercolor pencils and the wheel I think - though we are going to start off with what we have.
