I received a new catalog from my favorite company Paper and Ink Arts. It's not about the deals, I just love what they offer. I'm a calligrapher, and their products cater to this area.

I just had a few questions about watercolor paints and brushes, for all different ages. What kind of watercolors do you like to use? Do you like pencils that can be used as watercolors? Do you ever do nature journaling or other kinds of painting and have "travel paints"?

There's such a variety to choose from their catalog. These Peerless were especially intriguing, because it seems you could take a water brush and these colors and go anywhere.

And does anyone like to use water brushes?

Oooo...those look so cool. We don't take paints along outdoors but it's an idea. I recently bought a pretty low cost 8-pack of Prangs plus a package of watercolor crayons. I do like the pencils after what little I've done with them (I am such an artist wannabe). I'm actually going to be working on some watercolor treatments combined with decopage for some shelves and other decorations but for travelling I'd say try the papers!

ETA: The water brushes look like way too much trouble IMHO....no, no scratch that. They look great for plain water but I wouldn't bother with the loading them up with paints.

I have a set of Loew Cornell tube watercolor paints. I've started slowly upgrading to the Van Gogh tubes. These aren't good for "travel." I do have several sets of watercolor pencils, too. They are really good for "travel" so work well for nature study and on-site journaling and painting. This is what MacBeth has always recommended. We have some crayola ones but our nice set is the Prismacolor. They are easy to use and give fantastic results.

I have a waterbrush. I haven't used it all that much - generally for chalks and watercolor pencils. Hadn't tried it with the watercolor pans. So your question here prompted me to get it out (it's been a few years ) and try it with the pans. My daughter loves it - her new favorite art supply. It appears we will be getting some more (need regular tips - we have only the broad tip). I actually have what I thought was a ZIG H2O Brush from EK Success. That is just how it is packaged because in looking at the brush itself I find it is a Kuretake. My online research indicates that the Kutetake and the Niji (which is what your catalog has) are basically the same brushes.

I really do need to use this for when we are out - I bought it as a stamping supply so didn't think of it for nature study. Duh.

They do look intriquing (don't tempt me.... ) Any small watercolor pan (tin) with waterbrush can go anywhere just as easily, I think.
