Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The February blahs set in, so my kids and I started a "Calendar Club" to try to beat them back a bit. It has taken on us on some great little rabbit trails, so I thought I'd share the idea.

We find out what special dates and themes are in the month using Literature for Lively Lessons by Sheila Edwards, as well as Liturgical Calendar, etc. Then I go to the library and find some books that fit. We read them at tea time and see where they take us . . . voila! Calendar Club!

For example, this month is Library Lovers Month (should be also known as Homeschoolers Month!). We've got:

The Library by Sarah Stewart
Goin' Someplace Special by Patricia McKissack (which is about segregation and a good tie in to Black History Month)
When the Library Lights Go Out by Megan McDonald

Any other library book ideas?

We are also thoroughly enjoying this week, which is National Table Manners Week. You've got a few more days to work on perfecting that etiquette and reading books like What Do You Say, Dear and What Do You Do, Dear!

Can I join your club?

We are doing something similar! I've filled up our calender with author birthdays, historical events, and fun days to read picture books about on that day.

Yesterday was Bicycle Safety Day so we did some maintenance on bikes, read books about bike safety, and went for a ride.   Several birthdays this week...author Jane Yolen and Judy Blume. Thomas Edison, Abe Lincoln, Chuck Yeager, Susan B Anthony, and Galileo..all born this week & we're reading picture books about them on their birthday.

It's so exciting to read what another family is doing. I really like what your calling it...Calendar Club.

As for library books....I just received one that is both for Black History Month & deals with the library.
Richard Wright and the Library Card

Based on a true story (!) about a black man who wants to read, but not allowed to check out library books. So, he uses the card of a white coworker. It's a very good book.

Amy, not sure how old your kids are, but a wonderful picture book is "L is for Library". We really enjoyed it.

GREAT ideas folks! There are so many strange/interesting/lovely "national day of" on the calendars or "this day in history" -- you could do a whole school year on these things!

Have a blast and keep us posted with things you do -- crafts, etc, OK?

Another good "library" book is Help, I'm a Prisoner in the Library. I can't remember the author, but I loved it as a kid, and my dd just read it and loved it.

How fun. We have a printed sheet for each months special days but with our being ill the last week I haven't looked ahead to plan anything for this next week.

I think all these "little extra's" make the day seem so much more fun, not to mention that my kids like to stump their youth Pastor who is normally pretty "up" on all these fun things.
