Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

There is a possibility that we may spend 4-8 weeks in Bristol, England this summer. Can anyone recommend things to do while we are there for a small (autistic) boy and his mom (and maybe an adult autistic sister)? And can anyone tell me where to find a Catholic church there?

Thanks!

In Christ,
Deborah

Deborah,I don't know Bristol personally, but it is one of England's oldest and largest ports, so I'm sure there will be plenty of maritime history there. Don't miss Bath, which is a stunningly beautiful city with Roman remains, Regency buildings and an ancient abbey church. There is usually street entertainment, which your son might enjoy. Glastonbury is fairly close - it has links with the King Arthur legends, and is also supposed to be where Christianity was first brought to England by St Joseph of Arimathea (check out the legend of the Glastonbury thorn). Unfortunately there is a now a lot of New Age-y stuff there - and check that you don't clash with the Glastonbury rock festival!

Don't forget that compared to the US niwhere in England is very far away. Bristol is only about two and a half hours from London by train, so near enough for a day trip ... it isn't cheap, but you can save a lot by checking out rail passes in advance.

Beaches and seaside - it isn't exactly Florida, but Weston-super-Mare is a nearby seaside resort.

Drive across the Severn Bridge to Wales and try to read the Welsh road signs. Lots of indusrial / mining history in South Wales.

That is all I can think of off the top of my head. This
tourist information website should give you some more ideas.

Churches I can't help with, but Google should throw up local Chuches and Mass times. (I'm on a slow dial-up connection or I would look for you). I'm not sure but I think Bristol may be in the diocese of Menevia.

Kathryn,

Thank you for your response. It was very helpful, and I look forward to checking out that website.

Maybe we'll even see you while we are wandering about.

In Christ,
Deborah

I don't know Bristol much either although I did go on a work trip there in a previous life.

The diocese website is here

It's got a zoo

There's a children's festival on in August!

Elizabeth,

The diocese's website is really neat! Thank you. I'll check out the other website after our car (just now conked out) is towed away.

Thanks!

In Christ,
Deborah
