Lots of mothers I know have bought the Story of the World books & CD's. I'm thinking of buying the cd's for car trips.
I have heard that they are good, but then I've also heard they largely add to the Bible stories and aren't very accurate.
Any experience?

We're enjoying Volume One in book form right now, nothing objectionable so far. There's a thread somewhere on this in great detail, I'll try to link it for you give me a few minutes...Rebecca???

We have all three volumes and I love them--- even the objectionable anti-Catholic parts. In volume 2, when King Henry VIII comes into play with
his breaking off from the church, my then 13 year old was like who would want to join a religion with such a bad start as that??? He couldn't believe King Henry VIII's reasoning for his wanting a divorce. Then, he couldn't believe how many wives he had after his 2nd wife. It's great for apologetic discussion. Our children could see the selfishness of the start of Protestantism all on their own!

Hi Lindsey,
Here's a thread I have found helpful. There are a few others you'll find when you do a search.
We have the 1st three volumes & my dc enjoy them, HOWEVER, we listen to the Anne Carroll cds which do clear up quite a few of the inaccuracies.

I find Anne Carroll's book presents the Catholics as always the 'good guys' which makes you doubt her accuracies as after all we weren't always in 'the right' Are her CD's more historically accurate?
I have just been doing search's on SOTW and am now dubious as some reviewers state that she is historically inaccurate in parts. However I do love the sound of her activity books.

I bought all 4 books and the activity book for the first one, which is the one we are using now. My kids like it, which is a plus for me. As long as I know when and where I need to correct the facts, I'm fine with the series.

Hi Erin,
I've read that (here) about Anne Carroll's books. We own them but I've only read bits here & there. There's NO doubt on her cds whose side she's on, however, she is VERY good about & actually makes an effort to present both sides. On her Inquisition CD, she uses a large chunk of information from a book written by a Jewish man. She does this often to "prove" that a particular author has nothing to gain by supporting the Catholic point-of-view. I don't know if she does that as a reaction to comments made about her books, but in all her cds (that we've listened to) she's very emphatic about providing proof. We all LOVE her cd's & I can't imagine listening to the SOTW without them.
As Kelly mentioned in the previous post, the SOTW cds are very pro-British & Protestant-slanted. Even my 12-year-old ds has picked up on that. Even with the Anne Carroll cd's, I'm sure there are plenty of things that are slipping by us. That being said, the SOTW cd's are one of our most valuable resources. There's nothing out there like it. My oldest dc is extremely auditory & LOVES history so it's a perfect fit. Is there anything written about history that's NOT biased? Seems to me that you have to read/listen to several different accounts.

We only have VOl 4 of SOTW. We actually like it. 
I am the only one ( so far) who has read it all the way through and while SWB is opinionated, I think it gives a decent picture and understanding of modern history. The kids have used it mostly as a resource - reading the section on parts of modern history that have come up during rabbit trails.

But are the reviews that I read (on Amazon) that some of the history is inaccurate true?
Also could I just buy the activity books and use them wihtout the volumes?

We have the activity books and I mostly use her reading list. For each chapter she has a suggestion for further history and cultural reading and suggestions for literature. The literature suggestions can be historical novels or some folklore tale from the country you are studying. I also use the maps but I don't use any other thing: games, review questions, narration questions. I wish
she would sell a separate reading list without all the other things.

Hi,
In STOW One there is some controversy over how she portrays Abraham. I think she got a tad bit carried away in the embellishment and you could just skip that section. She does explain why in her updated version that came out last year. I think that some Evangelicals have issue with her writing because she leaves a little leeway with Jesus, etc so that a secular person won't completely reject the book. Her history in Book 2 about the Catholics is slightly off but again she explains up front that both sides of the issue were good and bad. And with a standard Catholic text you could clear that up easily. As for the other comments from Amazon (I read them too). I think they were over done. For grade one on up I think these books are wonderful. We did Book one last year and book 2 this year with a first and second grader. I will stay away from books 3 and 4 for several years. But my daugher has fallen in love with history due to these books. Her activity book is good, particularly for the book lists and narration question, my dd does not like to color, so that part of the book is lost on her.

My 2 cents is that it would be difficult to use the activity books without the books. We have the books and the activity books and have enjoyed them both.
As for the activity books, I think it boils down to what kind of learner you have. For one of my dc, we never used the activity book - she doesn't like responding to formal questions, coloring pages, or doing proposed activities. We did use the supplemental reading lists, but there are also recommended reading lists in The Well Trained Mind.
One of my other dc LOVED the activity books. She answered each question, colored every page and insisted on doing at least one activity per chapter.
Perhaps you could try and buy one used activity book and see how it goes. There is a sell and swap board at the Well Trained Mind website. You can also find discounted activity books on the internet.
