Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The March for Life is a week away, and I was hoping to prepare for my girls' (3 and 5 y.o) inevitable questions. Last year, there were just a lot of "what are they saying, Mama?" (chants of Roe v. Wade has got to go) and pointing out the pictures on signs (I cover their eyes when we pass the graphic ones).

I was planning to bump up Cay's October books (Angel in the Waters and Horton Hears a Who), and just do a repeat in October for Respect LIfe month. We'll look at pictures of previous year's marches so they can anticipate the signs and crowds and praying, etc. We will resume riding in the parish bus again to get them around our pro-life friends.

It may help to have some songs we can learn but I don't know of any. Anything else?

Thanks for the advice.

Diane,
I don't have very good advice for you, just an experience to share. When my oldest ds was 4 he and I went to the March along with some friends on a bus from our church. On the way there he asked why we were going to the March. To try and keep it simple I just said something like, "well, there are some people in this world who don't know that Jesus loves all babies even the ones still in their mommie's tummies. We're going to the March to help make sure everyone knows that." Well, he didn't say anything more and I let it go at that. While at the Rally just before the March a reporter from a local radio station approached us. She asked my son something like "what's a little guy like you doing at this?" I almost stepped in but he said quite loudly, right into her microphone, "Because I just want everyone to know that Jesus loves babies, SPECIALLY the ones still in thier mommy's tummy!". I'll never forget it.
I too was worried about graphic signs and chanters that get out of hand. Really though, he didn't seem to notice the signs (I think he was too short) and if we were near people getting a little too boisterous we just moved. It ended up being a great experience for both of us. The following year my dh and I both went with my son and 9 month old baby girl.

Thanks, Becky. And that was really special, having your 4 y.o. speak out like that.

I will remember to try to answer as simply as possible. I have dreaded the "whys" that don't end, and find myself retorting to them with an "oh, look at that statue!"

Thanks!
