I found this quote on Catholic Culture's Candlemas page:
Before the revision of the General Roman Calendar this marked the end of the Christmas season. The reformed calendar has designated that the Sunday after Epiphany, the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, is the end of the Christmas season. This feast is no longer referred to as the "Purification of Mary" but the "Presentation of the Lord".
Does anyone know why the Baptism of our Lord is on Monday 1/8 and not on the Sunday after Epiphany (which this year is actually Epiphany Sunday - right?)? Is the Baptism always on 1/8? Unfortunately I threw out my calendar from last year.

Short answer: yes, I know why the Baptism of Our Lord is on Monday, and no, it's not always on the 8th.
But it requires a longer answer.
General Norms of the Liturgical Calendar
7. In those places where the solemnities of Epiphany, Ascension, and Corpus Christi[a] are not observed as holydays of obligation, they are assigned to a Sunday, which is then considered their proper day in calendar. Thus:
a. Epiphany, to the Sunday falling between 2 January and 8 January;

35. Christmas has its own octave, arranged as follows:
a. Sunday within the octave is the feast of the Holy Family;
b. 26 December is the feast of Saint Stephen, First Martyr;
c. 27 December is the feast of Saint John, Apostle and Evangelist;
d. 28 December is the feast of the Holy Innocents;
e. 29, 30, and 31 December are days within the octave;
f. 1 January, the octave day of Christmas, is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. It also recalls the conferral of the holy Name of Jesus.
36. The Sunday falling between 2 January and 5 January is the Second Sunday after Christmas.[R7]
37. Epiphany is celebrated on 6 January, unless (where it is not observed as a holyday of obligation) it has been assigned to the Sunday occurring between 2 January and 8 January (see no. 7).
38. The Sunday falling after 6 January is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
Of course, that doesn't answer your question entirely, because the Baptism of Our Lord is NOT on Sunday. You can see the Liturgical Calendar for the United States here (.pdf file). more years here.
Here are the "rules" our Liturgical Calendar. Note it says that if the National Conference (and that would be us) assigns Epiphany as a movable feast, it is assigned to the Sunday between January 2 and January 8. The Baptism of Our Lord falls on the Sunday after Epiphany UNLESS Epiphany is on January 7 or 8, so then it is the following Monday after Epiphany Sunday.

Jenn to the rescue, once again! Thank you! Surprisingly it does make sense to this fuzzy brain. But it's almost as complicated as the tax laws  !
I wasn't able to get the liturgical calendar for 2008 (it's available for purchase only), but I assume The Baptism of Our Lord will be on a Sunday then since Epiphany Sunday will be on the 6th (or the 5th - is 2008 a leap year?).

Brenda,
It looks like it will be on the 6th, see Catholic Calendar. There might be a few incorrect dates, but this one looks accurate. I do believe 2008 is a leap year, but January is before February 29, so it won't affect Epiphany yet.

Ahhh! I had forgetten the January rule. Just needed to make things a little more confusing for me  . SOOO, does that mean the Baptism of Our Lord will be on Sunday, January 13th next year?

Thanks once again for clearing this up for me. I was wondering why it fell on Monday this year.
We always celebrate Epiphany on January 6 in our home (thank you for the beautiful Epiphany Blessing). Tomorrow I will teach the Twelve Days of Christmas and Epiphany to my 6th grade CCD class.
Now my question is--when is the actual Baptism of Our Lord Celebrated? Is it a fixed date, or does it always float? I want this straight in my own fuzzy brain just for the sake of it.  Does this make any sense? Or is it as complicated as the tax law?

It's a complicated tax law. Easter is even more complex!
Here's the Christmas season (M is Memorial, OM Optional Memorial)
Fixed dates (for the most part):
December 25 Solemnity of Christmas
December 26 Feast of St. Stephen, protomartyr
December 27 Feast of St. John Evangelist
December 28 Feast of Holy Innocents
December 29 OM St. Thomas a Becket (or Thomas Canterbury)
December 30
December 31 OM St. Sylvester
January 1 Solemnity of the Mother of God
January 2 M Sts. Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen
January 3 OM Holy Name of Jesus
January 4 M St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
January 5 M St. John Neumann
January 6
January 7 OM St. Raymond of Penafort
January 8
These are the movable feasts that fall on the Sunday. Whatever date that is means the saint of the day is not celebrated:
Feast of the Holy Family falls on the Sunday after Christmas UNLESS Christmas is on a Sunday, and then Holy Family is celebrated on Dec. 30.
Epiphany of the Lord falls on the Sunday between Jan 2 Jan 8.
Baptism of the Lord occurs the Sunday after Epiphany or on the Monday after Epiphany if Epiphany on Jan 7 or 8. This is the last day of the Christmas season. Ordinary Time begins the day after the Baptism.

I was getting a little punchy by the time I got down to this line. My dc watched ChickenLittle at their friends' house today and I thought it said, "The Sky was falling."

Does anyone know what to do with morning prayer? Just follow the weekdays after the Epiphany even after the Baptism of the Lord until the following Monday? What about the Sunday that falls between?

Does anyone know if there is a specific time to commemorate/recognize "The Flight into Egypt"? I saw that the feast for Our Lady of the Flight into Egypt is February 4 - which would make sense after the Presentation. But I could also see it any time after Epiphany through February. Thoughts?

Yes. Bapstim of Our Lord is the last day of the Christmas season. Ordinary Time begins the day after the Baptism.
It's bittersweet, isn't it? I'm sad to have an end to Christmas, but I'm a little eager to take down the decorations and get into organizing my year and house.

Gwen, you would start First Week of Ordinary time for Tuesday.
Other years that the Baptism would fall on Sunday the "days after Epiphany" section would be used.

I wrote a post on my blog about the traditions in the early church and the celebration of the manifestations of God on January 6. In the early church, all of the childhood events in the life of Jesus were celebrated on January 6. So it is my view, that the Christmas season is the festal period in which it is appropriate to meditate on these events as well as the specific feasts prescribed in the modern church. Now, for specifics on exact dating according to the new calendar...Jenn is most definitely the expert.

I appreciate all the information here in this thread. (Thanks, as always, Jenn, for sharing your knowledge! )
Can I ask what you all are doing for tomorrow to celebrate this feast? At CCD last week, my 7yo's class had a "mock" baptism up in the church using a baby doll. It was so sweet - he even got to be the father and hold the baby (the mother wanted no part of it ). And when he was asked what name he gave the baby he said, "Dawn."
I have yet to peek in my books, but I thought I'd ask here first.

In Germany we still celebrate Epiphany on January 6th, no matter what day it falls on. So today, Sunday, is the Baptism of our Lord here in Germany, and next Sunday Ordinary Time begins.
In our Parish Church we sing Christmas songs until Candlemas on Feb. 2nd although we have ordinary time.

Dawn, I am working on a post that describes in detail the Icon of the Baptism of Our Lord and will be offering a coloring page of the Icon for download on my blog. I'll post on this board when it's up.
I think this feast is the perfect time to fill up the bottles and fonts in our homes with Holy Water from our parish and prayerfully recall the blessing of our own baptism.
