I cannot recommend this short chapter book by Kirkpatrick Hill highly enough. It is a lovely look at Charlotte Mason methods applied in a natural way and the students' enthusiastic response. The setting is a one-room school in Alaska. The story begins a bit slow and my dd didn't want to keep reading. Sure am glad we did continue the story, because we would have missed a gem. One of the those stories I could not help crying through the end, even with the kids' eyes upon me

Great! We were going to read that next, along with The Very Last First time (FIAR) and a unit study on the arctic and Alaska. Thanks for the heads up that we might need to "get through" the beginning. :)

I'm wondering what age group this book would work for as a read-aloud. My 5 1/2 yo dd has loved the Little House books; is this at a comparable level?

Just want to add my enthusiasm for "Miss Agnes" by Kirkpatrick Hill, but my lack thereof for one of his other books, Tough Boy and Sister, a mid-grade novel which includes vulgar language and serious situations (including violent alcoholism).

5 1/2 yo may be too young. Like Little House, these Alaskans have physically-demanding lives. Unlike Little House, the main character does not go home to loving parents. 2nd or 3rd grade and up?

Bumping this for fun! We read this aloud a couple years ago and my older girls still remember things from it. One of them asked me to request it again from the library to read on her own this summer.

Bumping this up again. I couldn't read the end with crying (happy tears).
What a truly great story
This could be the "poster child" book for living learning . It changed the lives of the children in the story. It's hard to think of the way Miss Agnes taught compared to the way the kids in many schools today are taught.
Night and Day difference.
I never had a teacher like Miss Agnes. Did you?

I just checked this out and so read it after your post, Melinda. Wonderful book. I agree, perfect book to illustrate living learning. The child learns by making their own connections. Charlotte Mason said, "Education is the Science of Relations" and this is shown so clearly in this book.
I did have one or two teachers like Miss Agnes, particularly in 8th grade.
