I would like to make or buy one for my ds to tinker with. All those who have used one- did you make it yourself? Was it extra large? small? magnetic? laminated? What seemed to work best?
Thanks!

I have mine sized to fit on a regular sheet of cardstock, then attached to a sheet of colored construction paper, then laminated. It works well for my purposes and the squares end up being the right size for standard counters (small plastic chips) to cover them just right. This is for use with my 11 yo ds.

OK, here is a silly question:
What do you all do with hundreds boards? I've heard of them and even seen them, but can't figure out how they are used in teaching math. (Other than counting numbers up to 100 or maybe counting by 10's.)

Not a silly question at all! I taught middle school math for years before I began using hundred boards. I always thought they were for littles only. But then I took a seminar by a fantastic teacher named Marcy Cook and I saw how they could be used for upper elem and middle school.
Here is her website list of books of acvtivities for hundreds boards for all ages.
MArcy Cook- hundred boards books
My ds LOVES these activities. We have Mental Math with Tiles and the Hundred Chart, Color it on the Hundred Chart, and Number search on Hundred chart. Loads of fun and great for mental math skills.
Marcy also has books and task cards and activity sets with other manipulatives (we love all the tiling books, algebra, place value, geometry, etc )and they are all wonderful. Ds begs to do them and would do them every day if I didn't have other stuff for him to do! Be sure to check out the entire website and not just the page I linked to. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

These books look really neat Theresa. I know you do some Montessori work in your homeschool, would you say these books make a good Montessori activity?

We use our hundreds board almost every math lesson. I leave it in front of the dc as they work their practice sheets they can see how to make a number they are struggling with, we practice counting, they practice patterns and any skip counting, some need to see how to add and subtract.
Mine are laminated, which means we use the dry erase markers with them all the time and the number patterns show up soooo well!
The squares are 1" ,I think, so we can use colored tiles on them too but I prefer having the child use the markers.

Becky. That's a good question. I have only been using them with my ds as dd is not quite ready (soon!)and we definitely don't use them in a Montessori way. BUT, I think they could be made to be self-directed and self checking if you use the Task Cards, rather than the books, and make the answers readily accessible. The task cards are set up to be done independantly. I do plan on getting some of those sets for dd soon and will be setting them up in an independent math center.
The books are more teacher-directed, as in calling out the directions and the child follows along with his hundred board or tiles. You could, however, give the child the directions to do on his own, and some of the books are set up that way (meant for teachers to display on the overhead). With ds, we like to do them together, like a game because it is more fun that way, and because it really helps me to assess his ability.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the information, especially the link to the website. It looks like I could make a board pretty easily and then use some of the books and ideas from Marcy Cook to make it really interesting.
But I also see that my ds (4 yrs) is too young still to do a lot with it. We'll just play with it for now- look at all those numbers on one page (wow!)- and keep it waiting in the wings.
I always learn so much on this site. Thank you all for sharing!
