Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Wondering how others do this.

I like to encourage independent learning as much as possible and use a weekly assignment sheet to achieve this. The days just seem to go by so quickly and without a goal for the week many things just wouldn't get done. We're doing this while touring the continents this year.

At the front of each notebook is the following:

All on one page:

A list of the books to be read for the week (can be read in any order)Includes history, science, and religon

A craft/project book to be read on Friday and one activity done (child chooses)

Math lessons to be completed (can be spread over the week or done more quickly)

Handwriting lessons which must be done over the week and not all at once

Map work checklist(where is --- located, what route was taken, what is a natural resource there, what does their flag look like, etc.)

Research (informal and as simple as looking a topic up in an encyclopedia book or other reference book and reading it)I just list a couple of topics to choose from and they choose one to be looked up and they choose how to find the information. I also have 1 box that says other, so they can choose a topic of their own to look up if they want instead. native animal

Other pages:

Narration assignment sheet (done orally, comes to me when that book is read)
A poem to be memorized
A copywork page with a grammar or literary technique lesson to complete (from one of the books)

I know this looks complicated, but it really isn't. It is only 4 and is very brief with just little boxes to check off and it keeps them focused all week.

The pages look like this:

The first page:

Read the following books this week in any order you choose.

-- North American Indians
-- Paddle to the Sea
-- Tree in the Trail
-- Minn of the Mississippi
-- Hold On, McGinty
-- Apples to Oregon
-- The Erie Canal
-- The Very Last First Time
-- The Crafts book
-- One Square Backyard book

Be sure to complete these lessons this week.

Math lessons 1 - 5
Handwriting lessons 1 - 5
Map work
     locate Oregon
mark Paddle to the sea route
     color the us flag
what shape does the continent of North America look
     like. Draw the shape.
What oceans are on either side of North America

Research to find out about two native animals from North American and narrate on 1

DON'T FORGET TO READ YOUR POEM THREE TIMES EACH DAY
(Tell it from memory on Friday)

The other pages:

Narration Page (you make this together on Friday)
Poem page (just the poem printed out)
Copywork page ( a passage from one of the books read that week followed with two or three questions about it -grammar or mechanics, or literary technique)

They do come and ask questions through the day, but do much of it on their own. This frees me up to do housework, cooking and other things that need to be done

What do you do?

Do you think this is too school like? I am trying to get away from that, but I think it is so ingrained in me that it just keeps slipping out.

I do something similar because with multiple children sometimes their list will answer their question and keep from interrupting someone else's 1 on 1 time. Each of my older ones gts a list on a daily basis to check off with their assignments in each subject, any jobs or chores they are responsible for that day, laundry details, etc

What I want to know is how old are the kids you're doing this with? (so I can look forward to the day when... )

This year with Marianna I am setting out a week at a time using the Tanglewood Corebook (I paid $5.25 for it unlimited copies and I sneakily use my dh resume paper - such nice creamy stuff!) I really, really like it as it is CM friendly, listing Nature Walks and Copywork and Poem of the Week. Besides, it's cute! Much cuter than the random scraps of paper I used to grab and use to list her work on, trying to be green, using backs of scribbly paper and all...
