I'm starting a new thread regarding specifically this pegs sytem. PEGS

The last parts of this thread also deals with this: thread

How do you use this system and make it work. Give ideas of how you've "tweaked" the system for your family.

For the last four weeks, I've been using MM, tweaking it just for us, assigning certain tasks to certin chldren. Now that we're in the habit, I'm ready to make a go of it using PEGS.

Great! I really like MM, but now I'm seeing that I might want to customize my own next year. I'm afraid if I completely write my own I won't follow it. I feel like MM is telling me what to do, rather than myself telling me what to do (and then not doing it!) Make sense?

Elizabeth, do you have a little time to write HOW your pegs system works? Do you have the kids flip them over when done? Do you have problems with them knocking it off? The hanging magnet that came with it does NOT work for us! Poor ds10 LOVES the pegs idea but he is very hyper and kept knocking it completely off and he got so frustrated with it falling. I'm planning on really screwing it to the wall with block spacers.

It would be great to hear more of how you make it work. I spent a lot of money on it and I really would like to use it, but I don't really care for the system they recommend. I know this could be a good thing for our family just need a little guidance here. Anyone else, too?

I purchased the PEGS system, too. We have used it a little bit with limited success...

I have the kids responsible for turning over their discs themselves. This is the beauty of this particular system, if you ask me...It is very easy to see where each child is task-wise by a quick glance at the board. Then, the real work begins--follow up! This is where I usually get into trouble with my not-so-motivated children.

My 8 year old LOVES her peg board and does it daily--my 6 yr old needs a little bit of prompting but does well, also. My 11 yr old hates it and my 4 yr old, well, she needs my help to turn the discs over, but otherwise will do her tasks...I did try and choose tasks that are age-appropriate, obviously...but none of my children get excited when the dishwasher disk ends up on their column!

I think part of our problem was not customizing it better to fit our family's needs and not going slow enough to really work on instilling good habits which need to go hand in hand with this whole process.

I nailed mine securely to a small wall in my kitchen. No way would it have lasted on my fridge--plus mine is too big--it wouldn't fit!

Sarah,
The best I can do right now is to attach a copy of my modified MM list for this week. We spent Monday at Molly's, so I moved Monday's chores to Tuesday. I'm up to my eyeballs in some crises here, so pix of the PEGS will have to wait, but bacisally, I've made discs for all the chores that repeat on the MM list.

A couple things ...

First a "green" question ... What does "MM" mean?

And secondly, I checked out the peg system (thanks Sarah for the link!) --- It's too soon for me to use something like that (dc are only 3 and 18 mos) but I had a thought to add for those of you that do use it: maybe you could draw a little smiley face on the back of each "task" so that when the dc turn them over they get a small "reward" by seeing a smile!    If I were going to use the system I would definately do that --- whenever I see a smiley face I feel like smiling back! I even designed our family meal planner so that when the meal is finished and enjoyed you flip the card and it says, "Yum!" on it!

Sarah, Thanks for starting this new thread. I'm very intrigued by this system, but the price is a bit steep, so I'd like to hear that people are using it successfully with their families.

Elizabeth,

Yes, I was wondering as well....how did you "tweak" those lists? They come as a PDF file. Do you have the full version of Adobe Acrobat or did you retype them all?

Kathleen

I'd like to know how you tweaked those lists onto a word document. Great list. I can't wait to hear more.

I bought the Motivated Moms full-sized planner. Then I printed a month's worth to get a sense of what the repeating jobs were. I tried the plan as written for two weeks. I recognized that we need to clean much more than that to keep up. For instance, my kitchen floor needs daily washing or we get ants.

So I retyped one week's list in Word, with just the repeating jobs, adding and deleting to suit me. I was determined to keep it to one page. My daily list is much longer than MM's. I had already divided the kids' rooms into "zones" al a Flylady, so I just put those room zones into the appropriate days on the right.

On Sundays, I print the MM week, and then use it to add anything that pops up that I want to include into my week. So, the MM chores that re unique to each week will show up on my plans too, if they suit us. I also tweak depending on what we're doing. If we're going to be gone all day, I move things around. Michael is gone all this week, so I re-assigned his chores.

Here's another example, for this week. The chores in blue are the regular chores. The ones in pink are special for this week.
2006-07-30_071932_DAILY_CHORES--August_06.1.doc

My job this afternoon is to take the PEGS disks and key them to the regular chores. I'll use an extra fine Sharpie to do it. I don't use the circle disks with the line through it, so I can flip those over, should I need extra disks. I do use the green disks, so the children can cover shores they've completed. I can't figure out why it's so hard to get a decent picture of the board. And I really don't want to take it down and move it elsewhere just for picture purposes. When Michael returns home, I'll have him try again.

This is going to seem like a really silly question , but Elizabeth, how do you clean your floor? I have determined mine also needs daily washing, but I hate to drag out the mop every day. I end up spot washing with a spray cleaner but that doesn't feel very thorough or efficient.

Thank you, by the way, for sharing your schedule. It is such a great system!

Have you ladies tried a wonderful floor cleaning machine called the "Floormate"? It's basically a wet-vac with scrub brushes. You can use it to vac and to "mop" the floor, with suction to pick up the dirty water. I'm always amazed at how dirty the water is when I empty it out after cleaning our floor! We've had it for about five years and it just keeps going --- it works VERY well! The only thing I have to mention about it is that if you have a tile floor (which may not be perfectly level from tile to tile) the scrub brushes won't always make the best contact with the floor and the suction won't pick up all of the water. I just go through and spot clean/dry as necessary when finished. You probably still want to do a good mopjob every-so-often, but this would be perfect for you ladies that have to mop every day! YIKES! I can get back to you with the exact model number if you are interested. Oh, and I thought of something else that might be a drawback --- you're supposed to use the cleaner that is designed for the machine. I think it's Lysol. I use it maybe twice a month, so that doesn't bother me. But if you were using it every day, with little ones, that might not be the healthiest. I don't know if there's any information out there about what would happen to the machine if you did use an environmentally/kid friendly cleaner. Probably NOTHING!    Hoover "Floormate"

Oh, and I think we paid just around $130 for it (at Foley's on sale). Maybe steep, but I really DON'T like to clean floors so it's worth it!!!

Kristin this machine sounds awesome! I thought I'd mention that our carpet cleaner says the same kind of thing about using the "right" cleaner and we actually use just hot water.

My kitchen floor just cannot seem to stay clean! It's always crummy sticky etc. I like the idea of this machine because I honestly never got the hang of mopping. I know there must be an easier way - both my bathroom and kitchen floors could use more frequent cleaning.

I think you ladies would just love this cleaning "tool"! I know I do, and I only have dh, myself and two little ones (oh, and two cats !) contributing crumbs, dirt, (and furr)!

We have a fairly large kitchen/dining room that is all tiled and it takes me about 15-20 minutes to vacume and "mop" the entire thing. If the floor has been vacumed recently, I can touch up with a quick sweep or dust-vac and then the mop takes 10-15 minutes! (Plus a little dry time.) After having it for five years, I cannot imagine life without it!

When we first got the machine I remember thinking that some of the operating mechanisms were counter-intuitive. But once you get the hang of it you can really zip along and you have a clean floor --- just like that! (Really, I'm not working for Hoover on the side ... although maybe I should! )

Let me know if/when you get one --- I'd love to share in your excitement! It's my all-time favorite household "tool"!

I'm sure they would like this, too! Something to keep in mind if you do buy one and if the kids do use it: emphasize not allowing it to fall backwards and slam down on the hard tile floor. It's a pretty stable and sturdy machine (our model is, anyway) but this happened to me once when I was in a hurry and a key piece broke off. Sad day! DH came through though and visited the local Hoover store and saved the day!

The model number of ours is H3000, Series # W4.5 ---

Hope you decide to get one!
