A couple years ago the kids made a fireworks demonstration in the kitchen. I want to say we used food dye in a glass of milk but I can't---for the life of me---remember exactly what we used or how it was done. I was wanting to do it again this year for the younger girls but can't find any info on the Internet.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about???

That was our very first homeschool science experiment!
What fun!

Do you think this would work in some liquid other than milk? Is it just that the whiteness makes it easy to see the explosion?

I'm not sure. Good question though.
My teenagers were the first to hollar: "Dad!!! Mom's wasting the milk!!!"
Spoil-sports.

Okay, here's my remembrance from years ago when we first did this experiment.
The milk is very important as it has milk fat in it and the dishwashing liquid contains degreasers that react against the fatty acids in the milk. The food dye allows us to see this happening.
Please correct me if wrong - I couldn't find anything online to back this up so it's coming straight from the depths of my brain

Does this mean skim milk won't work?

I didn't even think about the fat...we just tried it with skim and it didn't work too well.

I'm late chiming in here, but yes that would be why fat is important to this experiment. Here is a Steve Spangler science experiment/explanation. It explains it well with good visuals.
One more thing - we found another cool milk/food coloring experiment this spring when we did space. It's from The Way the Universe Works.
"Creating a Storm" - mimicking Jupiter's storms
-Pour one cup of milk into a large bowl, then add one drop each of red and yellow food colorings. Very gently gently swirl the bowl around to mimic the movement of Jupiter's atmosphere.
-Now put one drop of dishwashing liquid into each of the drops of food coloring. Give the bowl another gentle spin and watch the storm brewing.

Thanks, Mary!
