Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I wasn't sure where to post this question. I hope it's okay to ask it here.

I would love to hear your suggestions about teaching Latin. My children are 9 and 11. My oldest has completed Prima Latina, Latina Christiana, First Form Latin and is currently working on Second Form. My youngest has completed Prima Latina and is working on Latina Christiana I.

Prima and Latina Christiana are pretty gentle in their approach. While my oldest has learned a great deal in the Forms series, Latin is a huge struggle at times.I don't mind pushing them, but I am starting to second guess whether this is all necessary. I would like for them to learn Latin, especially since we attend the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. However, I would value your ideas. Do we continue to work strenuously to learn Latin with the Forms series or is there a gentler approach that would yield fruit?

Thank you for your expertise.

We are Latin slackers over here! We started attending the EF six years ago and I counted that exposure as good enough for a long time. Our oldest did some Latina Christiana and the next three have done or are doing Henle without having done much before.

All that to say I wish I had done more Latina Christiana with them in junior high to make it easier for high school Latin. And our college gal really wishes she would have done more Latin in high school.

So we're trying to be a little more serious about it and our 7th grader is just doing Prima with the intent of completing I and II before high school when she'll begin Henle.

That seems kind of weak written out like that. :)

We attend the EF as well (for 9 years). I enjoy the structure and discipline in the Memoria Press series to introduce Latin. I use Prima and then LC I (I stretch LC I over two years), and then we transition to Visual Latin I and II which teaches its way through Henle Latin. My boys REALLY enjoy Dave Thomas/Visual Latin!!! If you're looking for something that can step out a little, I might suggest Visual Latin. (You can even view several sample lessons on the website, I believe.) I stop after VL 2, which then gives us two years of a foreign language in high school (VL I and 2).

Latin is an extraordinary language to learn for many reasons. It's the language of the church, it is unchanging (because it is a dead language), and so much of the root etymology of english comes from Latin. Learning Latin has other far-reaching benefits that my kids have experienced - like sticking with something and learning to break something down logically (learned through translating). My oldest daughter said that learning Latin is what she felt prepared her the best for the ACT - not because she saw Latin on any tests, but because it helped her to think and reason things out logically.

Jen,

Thanks so much for your reply. I will take a look at Visual Latin. We have completed Prima and LCI. As I mentioned, my oldest in working through Second Form and it is starting to feel like more time than I want us to spend on Latin. For us to really be successful, we need to spend an hour a day working through the work and doing the recitation. I am looking for a bit of a gentler approach. After doing First and Second Form with my daughter, I have concerns as to whether or not my son could do this without tons of frustration.

I have been tossing around the idea of Cambridge Latin. After checking out Book One from our library, I really like the looks of it. I will definitely take a look at Visual Latin as I discern this.

Thanks again.
