I'm sorry if this is posted somewhere else.
I am looking for an online class for my 11th grader for Literature/History (Medieval or Modern History).
I was reading the thread about High School without being enrolled... and nodding my head about my own 3rd child. He did Kolbe for 9th ('did' is generous). We were still in recovery mode from Rose and Peter and it wasn't a good fit for me because I am often the weak link in my kids' education anyway and wasn't able to do the reading and grading, etc. He sort of did MODG for 10th. It's too complicated to write out how this all went.
In frustration over this very bright kid who is clearly not working to his potential and not finishing work(!), I had him take a practice SAT the other day. He has completed Algebra I and most of Algebra II but still needs to take Geometry. So, with no Geometry and kind of doing two years of high school work, he scored a 1720.
In the past two days, I have come to the peace-inducing decision to not enroll him anywhere for 11th and 12th grade. I wonder if he is bored. I'd like to cover the basics for college entrance but also find some things/courses that light a fire under him. He is an excellent reader which is why I went with Kolbe in the first place. I liked the program but just can't keep up or bang my head against a wall one more time trying to get this kid to do work.
This is what we have planned so far:
- Latin (Henle) - Our priests are offering classes for homeschooled high schoolers. They will teach once each week, test and grade.
- Scripture: New Testament - Same as Latin
- Geometry: Teaching Textbooks
We have a biology text here (from Kolbe) and I need to regain access to a virtual lab we paid for (I pray this works).
He is playing soccer and continues to take piano lessons which is one of his loves and strengths.
We need something for History and/or Literature. He will do some Shakespeare with a dear local friend.
I looked at Homeschool Connections but didn't see a course that fit.
Where else can I look?
I realize as I speak about this and type it out here that we have some self-discipline and even obedience issues. He is of the age that we want to all come together and make a plan. But, we will be making a schedule for him and my husband is on board to make sure work gets done. Hope that makes sense.
That turned into a long post! I could write so much more about this kid! Argh. It is a good thing he is so well-liked by almost everyone. But, charm will take him only so far!

Would a local college have a course that fit? Sounds like he may be ready to take the reigns on his own education.

Yes! Thank you, Monica.
I offered this to him last semester when things were going further south than they already were, but he didn't want to do it. Now he does and we want him to, but it is too late to register for this semester. We'll definitely look into this for the Spring semester and next year.

For clarity: We used a public charter for a long time and our two oldest graduated through them. Mostly everything at home, but they kept records, etc. We are completely out of that now and very happy. I don't really have trouble knowing what he needs to make a complete, college-worthy transcript, but need to fill in a few gaps in his course work this semester/year.

Have you looked at Homeschool Connections? I hear rave reviews about Phillip Campbell's history classes (kids in my poetry classes last year used to quote The Amazing Mr. Campbell all the time). There are some pretty juicy literature offerings as well, including lots of Shakespeare and (ahem) poetry.
Live classes are starting soon (most start after Labor Day), and some are filled, but many probably aren't. My own How to Read a Poem/Intro to Poetry fall class didn't make, but is available in recorded/Unlimited Access (with Instructor Access, so I do the grading, if a parent so desires). I teach for HSC, so of course I'm going to be a cheerleader! But really, I've been so impressed by my fellow teachers and the whole program.
Anyway, that might be something to think about, to fill your gaps for this semester.
And yes, dual enrollment/community college classes might be a great option. Some boys, especially, really need the accountability of a structured real-life class and teacher to inspire and motivate them, and it sounds as though you're already thinking along those lines. Even if every course he takes doesn't transfer to the college where he ends up, the exposure to classes at that level is really valuable -- and for a bright kid, feel that he's doing something advanced, real, and his own can be the thing that flips the switch.

Hi dear Erica,
I know this doesn't answer your literature problem, but have you considered adding another musical instrument ? He is definitely musically talented and passionate(?). For example: the organ, which he might be able to learn at your parish.
Maybe one of your priests can arrange it or another instrument. It would be a new challenge and something he would have to work at. It really is about getting their energy channeled and learning to work for something good, isn't it?
I also want our Dorothea to learn the organ at some point. Not that she has to become a church musician/organist, but that she can play at Mass when the need arises.
Erica, you are such a great mom and have wonderful kids.  I really wish I lived closer.

I know -- I feel the same way, especially after watching your beautiful video about Rose! Made me want to know you and your family in real life.
I find the HSC catalog kind of hard to navigate, frankly, but if you look for courses by Dr. Russell, Joseph Pearce, and Dayspring Brock, I think you'll find all kinds of offerings. (and then I'm poetry . . . ). Phillip Campbell is The Name in history there, at least according to my students. I know he has ancient history courses, and I think he's done a whole series following the Warren Carroll Christendom series of books, so hopefully there's a medieval/modern sequence. I haven't looked, but I know they've been promoting his "Christendom" classes a lot.

Here's another you can check out. http://tomwoodshomeschool.com/ This is what I saw that led me to his http://www.libertyclassroom.com/ The first is specifically for high school, the second are "general public". When I asked about it here I found one of the mom's here has used it and recommends it.
