Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking for chapter books for read alouds with take place in Russia or about Russian immigrants which contain Russian traditions.

I seem to remember one book where a family had to take in prisoners of war....Were the prisoners Russian, I'm not sure?

Any timeframe is fine. We are studying the geography of Asia..and we are on Russia right now. This is for a my two third graders. Thanks for any help you can give me.

This might be helpful. Also, Alyosha's Appleand The Wolfhound
The last two are about European Russia not Asian Russia though (as many out there are).

I've never read them, but the short stories by Sholom Aleichem are what they based Fiddler on the Roof on, and I have always wanted to read them. Here is an Amazon link, but I have no idea what edition to look for. There are a lot of options there.

And of course, there is the lovely The Kitchen Madonna by Rumer Godden where the children search for a Ukranian icon for their Ukranian house keeper.

Here is a neat resource I just stumbled across that has Andrew Lang's fairy tales organized by country of origin.

Gloria Whelan has a series of chapter books set in Russia. Am only familiar with the first Angel in the Square myself.

Can't think off the top of my head of any immigrant stories that are chapter books though I know of quite a few picture books.

Just to clarify, no Ukrainian worth his salt would be happy being identified as Russian. But, great book!

And on top of that Marta is from the Polish Ukraine so even less associated with Russia. Did a little history digging into the culture and nationalities regarding this book several years ago in this thread.

Another chapter book I thought of set in Russia - The Endless Steppe
