Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am trying to decide if I want to purchase Building Thinking Skills level 1 for Kim and Luke? I would like some sort of critical thinking work. Is there something better out there? Are there hands on things that would suit this purpose? They are both real smarty pants so it is hard to keep them challenged so any games or curriculum that would help keep them "calmed" down or nicely engaged would be a wonderful addition to our days.
So: Critical Thinking?
    manipulatives using thinking skills?
games that cause them to use their very smart brains constructively.

Mind Benders is really fun and takes no planning.
May I suggest an out of the box idea? Go to the Odyssey of the mind web site and look at the spontaneous problems. Some require prep on your part but others don't. Select one or two for each week so you are ready to go. I bet your kids will love them.

I just realized that there are only a few problems at the site. If you google "spontaneous problems for om " you should find a bunch.

Critical Thinking Press books are expensive - find more reasonable series like Logic Safari?

Latin is great for Logic.

Legos?

Jigsaw puzzles

Chess.

Like most families, we've played casually and my kids know which pieces do what. But this year, we are starting "Chess Fridays" in place of Morning Basket. I've been reading recently about all the gymnastics real chess players go through and the parallels of how the game is played and how a person thinks critically about life are fascinating.

So I'm not expecting little Bobby Fishers, but we are taking this year to really study the game using this book.

We also invested in a triple-weighted chess set that seems to give the game more "gravitas". This is much better than the cheap-sets we've bought in the past. The pieces feel solid, good, and deliberate in the hand. (Plus they stand up better to the little bumps typical of big family life... and we can take it to the park without worrying a breeze will disrupt the game.)

We did Mindbenders last year, but are trying this out for "logic" this year.
