Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are a total audiobook junkie family here. As soon as we get in the car, I hear: "Story, please".

Right now we are listening to "The Great Turkey Walk" on cd. My ds had tried to read the book last fall, but he got bogged down by the dialects. However, on cd the narrator does a fabulous job, and we are totally hooked. My library did not have the audiobook, but for $1 we were able to get it through ILL . This past spring we studied US history, so all the references to Bleeding Kansas, John Brown, etc are hitting home with my dc. I am really glad that we are not missing out on this one.

So that has got me thinking... in the past I have only vaguely tried to tie in our books on tape with our schoolwork. If I could get the book I was looking for, fine. If not, we would listen to some other interesting story.

Now I am looking over my book lists and making a book on cd plan for the year. My library has a lot of what I am looking for, and I am hoping to use ILL for the rest. My kids will still be doing plenty of reading from living books, but I am excited to put this plan in action...
although I did have a request for "no more Indian captive stories, please".
Hey- Calico Captive was a great book....

Just yesterday, when looking at what was available from one of my favorite Catholic readers at librivox, I discovered that she just started a blog cataloging free Catholic audio. She of course has her readingsnthere but is adding others as well.

I wish I was more deliberate in planning audiobooks, too. Usually we listen to our CCM memory work in the van, though, or Story of the World.

My 12YO DS loves audiobooks and he listens to them at bedtime a lot. He likes history, and here are some of his favorite audio books:

-Being George Washington by Glenn Beck
-Around the Great Horn Spoon
-Huckleberry Finn
-Abraham Lincoln and the Heart of America by Jim Weiss
-Priest on Horseback
-The Cat of Bubastes
-This Country of Ours
-The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (and all the Narnia books)

I get many of them from www.librivox.org.
