or now I find myself having to hide books
I am really into the heart of planning for next year at this point, and so I have stacks of books all over the house (so it seems) as I go through them and consider which to use.
My problem: as I pile up the living books I have that could be used as part of our science next year, my ds keeps walking over, saying: what's this? and taking the books away and reading them.
It seems so wrong to stop him, and, of course, I don't, but sheesh- I might be on plan F for science reading before I get my ducks in a row!
He's too quick for me...

It happens like that every year it seems! I actually told my 3yo yesterday that he could not read the new-to-him book he picked up and was so excited about. Thankfully I caught myself and let him look at it! I just want to save it all til we start "school"!

After I ordered this year's lot of books, I realized we needed a new bookcase.
So we now have a new bookcase in the basement by our new reading corner (a loveseat and scattering of cushions) where I'm keeping books that the children are allowed to read but I don't want to lose track of - most of next year's books will go here. Basically the children are allowed to read them but not remove them from the basement.
As far as I'm concerned the children reading ahead just means that they have their first experience of a book unspoiled by the restraints of study. Later they will hopefully have their experience of the books
enriched by deeper study but the summer is for sheer enjoyment.

from me too. It's what I was thinking and you said so much better than I could.

Just give him science credit for whatever he reads this summer, and have more time in your school-year schedule!
And yes, sometimes the free-from-requirement reading is really the most meaningful.

I have been known to stash credit for a year or more, particularly when we travel.
As a beyond-avid reader, I can assure you that there is nothing more delightful than to randomly pick up books and lose yourself in them.

I am rolling with my plan B's for the coming year.
I had planned to do a microscope unit in the fall and Botany in the spring.
However, ds is delighted with all the worm/grub/fire/destruction activities in Behold and See 5, so we will work with that this fall.
But I have to tell you, worms and grubs are not my thing. Digging them up, counting them, measuring them, drawing them and keeping them for pets... I think my dc are going to be on their own there. And that's before we get to all the grub activities.
I am hoping I can make it through....
