Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been reading back posts on this forum, but I still haven't found what I'm looking for. Perhaps it doesn't exists...

I need a high school chemistry solution that includes labs and costs next to nothing. Traditional texts and programs require chemicals and components that I can't access, living books don't have labs we can duplicate and homeschool programs that use household items for labs are either not rigorous enough or out of my price range.

Any and all ideas welcome! I read the the "Science without a Textbook" thread every year and always find something to mine...but I am stuck on this.

My boys will be in 11th grade. We did Biology last year by mixing a biology textbook with living books and some spotty labs from various sources. It was adequate but not spectacular.

Im afraid I dont have the answer BUT maybe part of AN answer would be to somehow use Khan Academy. He has just about everything online these days and I know our local private school and our parichial higj school uses his lectures a LOT to supplemt textts. My college son uses it as well for reference. Its good and its free!

Doesnt solve the problem with labs. If you have a textbook w labs, could you possibly hire a college chemistry major to come work thru the labs with your sons-or better yet, a retired chem prof looking for something to keep him or her busy?

Just some idle brainstorming! Good luck!

Hi Michelle,

I have some suggestions for you. My 3 older children actually did a chem class out of the house with a local homeschooling mom. However, she is no longer teaching, so for the next guy up I have researched my options.

1. I suggest Kolbe Academy with lesson plans and the virtual labs - the lesson plans are $45. The virtual labs are $60. The text you can find used on Amazon. And you need to buy the teacher manual/answer key for online access which gives you a virtual text, exercises etc.

2. For totally free you can look at CK 12 Flexbook Here is the teachers edition and if you search online you can find lab demonstrations - I just cannot find the link right now. You can also coordinate with a lab kit from The Home Scientist

3. Other free courses online - not sure about lab - Carnegie Mellon, Saylor ALISON
