It seems as though G especially gives it the old college try for about 3 wks, then sags and doesn't have any motivation. We already do project based learning, so there is some AM self-directed project time. PBL is finally just getting underway, and when you add it to the "core" subject time, we have a long day.

So, instead of getting really stressed out, I'm wondering if I should just build in a week straight of project work and school space maintenance once a month. They will miss out on their weekly allowance, but won't see me as a cranky mess. And, I can catch up a little on housework while mentoring them on their personal interests.

Anybody else build in some unstructured time (aside from field trips and coop)?

This year I only planned 30 weeks of formal school so that we had plenty of cushion for unschooling time. We also had a new baby, but as an unschooling wannabee, I like having extra wide margins for pursuing personal interests.

Yes. But then we are very relaxed in our homeschool anyway.

I use a 7 weeks on, 2 weeks off schedule and go year around.   I plan 6 weeks of lessons for the 7 weeks because we always have something come up that interferes with the schedule.    I usually try to keep a couple of things going during the break weeks so it isn't so hard to start up again.

And I keep my definition of academics broad enough to account for things like chore training, silent reading time, life experiences such as travel -- etc... when life is unschooly, I keep running track of self-designed projects and family learning events and so on.

That sounds like exactly what I am thinking about, Willa. We need some sort of consistency, but also some freedom.
