Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We just completed The Secret Code of Poetry from CHC as part of dd 8th grade language arts. I thought it was very well done and highly recommend it.

I thought I'd share the lesson plans I put together in case they may be of use to someone else. It's a daily breakdown of the assignments in The Secret Code of Poetry over 26 weeks, typically 3-4 days per week, with an occasional 5 day week.

If you want to convert the pdf file to a doc file so you can tweak the lesson plans for your own needs, here's an easy tool to do that: http://www.onlineocr.net/

Thank you :) I have that book. I had intended to use it, and never got around to planning it :)

Thank you! I was thinking about using this program in the future.

Do you think the program would work for boys who have no interest? I trying to figure out how to get them interested.

Hi pumpkinmom - I wish I could offer tips for boys, but I have all girls! Plus, dd I used this with loves poetry. I will admit she wasn't thrilled with analyzing poetry, which is what this program does. She thinks it ruins the enjoyment, something the author addresses in the first lessons. I just told dd it's an important skill and she just needed to do it. :-) She did well with it, and I think she learned a lot and enjoyed the poetry.

Ditto that for my son who just finished a poetry class in our co-op. Our intention for the class was for students to be exposed to and learn to appreciate poetry especially for its beauty to communicate, but our teacher ended up too much into analysis and most of the students did not "enjoy" it. To find the balance - analysis is important in that poetry is mean to speak to the reader in a unique way and the meaning is usually not evident (especially to literal readers, i.e. boys ) - but not lose the sense of it just being beautiful and enjoyable. We wanted a poetry class to be like the exposure to poetry from the old Integrated Humanities Program at U of Kansas which a former bishop talked up so much to us.
