Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

College admissions that require "proof of graduation".
While it is early (dd only in 10th) We occasionally look at colleges online to get a feel of what she likes. Today, I was looking at a list of schools that job recruiters ranked as being the ones they like and are top rated for the job recruiting. Anyway, we were looking at Penn state (top 3 were: Penn Sate, Texas A & M and Purdue). This is what they say homeschoolers need:

"Proof of graduation: high school diploma, diploma from an organization governed by a State Board of Education, or Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED)*"

I think the bit about an organization governed by the state. . . is really a pennsylvania thing. Here in Texas no one governs homeschoolers so that is out! Aslo - I really think GED is soooo stupid to require and don't know if I would have her take it. Anyone find a way to get around such nonsense. This is mainly out of curiosity as we are just wondering - its not like she cares either way about Penn State!

Reading more closely I also find:

Since some students in homeschool programs do not follow a traditional high school curriculum, we ask that all homeschool students provide us with complete and detailed documentation of their high school coursework and evaluations of progress from an approved homeschool evaluator or supervisor.

What gives with that! I see if you come from a state that requires that anyway! But were from Texas (best homeschooling state there is!)

When my oldest applied to Penn State, I had to submit the entire syllabus and book list for his high school career. Most of the other colleges he applied to accepted our home school diploma and transcript with no problem.

It is important for you to keep good records and maintain a transcript as you go through the high school years. It will really save you a lot of pain when you have to complete those applications! Believe me, you will not remember what your student studied or read if you haven't kept records of it all!

Also, be sure you apply to some "safety schools" if you want to guarantee a college experience. The percentage of admitted students at schools like Penn State is very low. The competition is fierce!

Good thing is - we don't care about Penn State. Just saw that and thought I'd be prepared in case we see it again. Good idea about records - I do have course descriptions (with expectations/assignments. . . of student) and book lists. As well as keeping track of grades and at end of year put them on the transcript.

Did you have to have your oldest take GED? That I have seen a FEW colleges require and truthfully is the main reason we won't apply to Penn State (REALLY it was just one school we happened to click on from an article).

What I thought was weird though was the "evaluations form an approved homeschool evaluator or supervisor". If she does apply to a school that has that again - I will assume that the homeschool evaluation/supervisor is ME. Because in Texas it is me!

Thanks for the advise though! I think Penn State will just not be lucky to have my dd even apply - not worth this Texans efforts!

It is nice that by LAW in Texas - public universities can't require anything extra from homeschooler then private or public students. And in Texas home schools are classified as Private Schools - so Public Universities are required to accept my transcript with nothing else but SAT or ACT scores!
