Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My son is a 7th grader this year; we use Seton. I started homeschooling him in 4th grade and he needed a lot of guidance and catching up in a lot of areas and thankfully he's on the right path (well, for the most part! ) Anyway, I'd like to start easing into giving him the responsibility of more independent work, especially spelling and vocabulary, in which he does consistently good work. I'd like to give him his assignments on Monday, telling him he has to have such and such done by Friday, with quizzes on that day.

What works for you as far as letting your kids (especially at this middle school age) do work on their own and essentially "check in" at the end of the week (or sooner)?

Thanks!!

I'm trying to get my 7th grader more independent as well. I find it works best to give him a checklist. As he accomplishes his work he checks it off, then when I check it I check it off as well. It's not considered done until I check it. I bought one of these Student Log Books to write his weekly assignment lists in. It's working really well! I was doing it at the computer and printing it off but I like keeping it all bound in a notebook better.

Regarding Seton, we are trying Seton for the first time this year and ... WOW... some of this is really hard for him. He's a very good reader but the history and Religion books are really a challenge for him. Maybe because we're not used to the text book thing. I started the year with him doing those subjects mostly independently, but I now see that I have to do those with him. He works on spelling, vocabulary and science on his own. He does his English semi-independently, meaning I go over things with him at the start of the week and he completes the assignments through out the week.

My ds has ADHD and some days are really a struggle for any work to be accomplished. This is why I check off the assignments. I usually work with my younger kids while he is working independently but I come over to him on occasion to see what he has completed and if he is doing his work well. I can't leave him alone for too long or he gets distracted, so I have to keep doing "fly by's" to make sure he's still on track.

Becky, my son also uses a checklist and he likes checking things off as he goes. If you are using Seton for the first time, yes, it would be really hard. The history book this year seems hard to us, too. It seems like it took a BIG jump from 6th to 7th grade. Seton's religion would be hard if you're using it for the first time. FWIW, the 6th grade religion was a really good base for going into 7th grade. A lot of what is covered in the Baltimore Catechism 2 is based on the assumption that your child covered all of it in 6th grade.

I appreciate your thoughts. Hang in there with Seton! It can be overwhelming when you're new to it but we really like it.

We do math and science this way. BUT I do spot checks throughout the week. In 7th grade I would give them a weekly syllabus and then ask them to get out their planning books and break down the assignments so that they would be ready to turn in by the due date. We spent abut 1/2 hour on this together. On the due date we would discuss what worked as far as their planning and what changes he/she should make in what subjects for next week.

Now, in 9th and 10th grade I hand them their weekly syllabus and let them make their own plans with their own calenders. We still debrief once a week, but they definitely have more control over their work.
