Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've committed to teaching a 5-6 year old class at co-op this year and decided to use the Catholic Mosaic book. I wanted to use Father Phillip tells a Ghost Story but can't find it at library and cheapest copy is $25 on Amazon and I can't even view it to see if it's even what I'd like to use. I was going to use it with the theme of All Hallow's Eve. I really didn't want to do the Day of the Dead and I'm doing Saints at the next class.

Soo, I decided maybe I could do something in conjunction with St. Michael the Archangel in relation to Halloween being about the fight between good and evil. Are there any books or ways to present this to 5-6 yr olds? I'm thinking maybe I should just completely switch gears and do something different. Maybe just Guardian Angels? At the first of the month we're doing Angel in the Waters and Horton Hears a Who.

It meets 2x a month and I'm realizing this is waay more work than I thought. Maybe b/c I've never done it.

Anyway, can you offer advice? I've looked through all the threads and didn't find any St. Michael or Halloween or All Hallow's Eve books I thought would work (being a picture book on a 5-6 yr old level) ??? Then I thought would parents be bothered that I even bring up Halloween so maybe just guardian angels would be the safest bet. ???

Kathryn-

I love the Fr. Phillip book, but I never got around to reading it to my dc until they were older, and that was a good thing. At 5 and 6 I think it would have scared them- plus it is a fairly long story and they could have not sat through it in one sitting. We still will take 2-3 days to read it around Halloween each year.

The stories in it are very good, but they are about ghosts and souls suffering in purgatory. Anyone who is ghost story sensitive might have a bit of a time with it- it is enthralling, but it still gives me goosebumps. So I would say that the guardian angel theme would be a better way to go with that age group.

You might pair an angel story with a book like "Is Halloween For Real?" (though I have not read that one in awhile and am not sure if it all is good with the Church's teachings- I can't remember any obvious red flags.

there is also The Pumpkin Patch Parable link
which is a sweet book and really has very little to do with Halloween.

If there isn't a book (which I am not thinking of any either) then just tell the story. This is a great story for a puppet show or felt board.

Such a tough situation! There is a dearth of picture books on any of these subjects!

I have a very rare Catholic book by Caroline Peters: Saint Michael, God's Warrior Angel. (BTW, Caroline Peters is the pseudonym for Eva K. Betz.). I only by chance have come across one other copy...I've never seen a copy for sale anywhere else. So that's not helpful.

I do think the story by Joan Windham would be good to read. You could make your own little "book" with images from Web Gallery of Art of St. Michael and the angels. I've put the excerpt here so you can get a taste of it.

The Father Phillip book is too verbose for a short read aloud. I ended up selling my copy because it was too much.

A story from Father Brennan that I think is just wonderful for All Saints day is his "Most Beautiful Picture in the World". I have it posted here. This is the focus of this feast -- all the saints in heaven, even those not canonized.

The Day of the Dead is different, and although some aspects are good to discuss and celebrate, we have to be careful because there are some pagan superstitions that need to be pointed out. This post was my compilation of our favorite books on this theme. Day of the Dead by Tony Johnston is our annual favorite, although we love the cartoon for "Dem Bones".

I like the idea of Guardian angels. I know we have a list of picture books somewhere. Tomie de Paola has a simple book, and I have a few more upstairs that I can't think of right now. But Angel in the Water covers that area, also.

October is such a great month.

The October Planning Thread can really get your juices going. October has so many great feasts!

St. Francis of Assisi has SOOO many books, it's harder to pick. I compiled a long list many years ago on my blog, but I know it needs to be updated.

St. Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi

St. Therese is another, and there's a sweet new book for her I mentioned.

And the North American Martyrs are in October. These are included in the planning thread, but we love singing the Huron Carol on the feast, with the picture books. I compiled my list here.

This isn't a book, per se, but I love the description of the homemade play by Florence Berger in Cooking for Christ for Halloween.

For guardian angels, we like the Wupsy stories from the Catholic Treasure Box series.

Oh, seconding Wupsy! And there is a good story on St. michael fighting Lucifer in Treasure Box too. I have the originals so cannot tell you what book it is in the reprints. But maybe Lindsay knows?

I was also thinking that it's the month of the rosary, so something in that realm, or October 22nd is the memorial of Blessed John Paul II....and it is rumored that he will be canonized in October, too. So it might be a good way to prepare the way!

There are a few copies on Bookfinder of "My Guardian Angel for Little Catholics", not dirt cheap but not super outrageous. This was a sweet series by Catechetical Guild "for little Catholics". We talked about them here. Also the St. Joseph Picture books by Father Winkler has one on the Guardian angels.

But Angels Angels Everywhere by Tomie de Paola give a good visual of angels guarding us all the time, but it's not QUITE accurate. If you didn't use Pascual and the Kitchen Angels for later in the year, it's a lovely book to use for guardian angels, also.

I don't have much to offer on the subject in general, but I never really liked this book and I also got rid of it. I felt like this book tried to cram way too much Catholic stuff in the book and tried to join a ton of different Saints stories together. I believe it was this book that also talked about abor**ion. I am as pro-life as they come, but at the time I was reading this book I hadn't talked much in depth about this to my kids and didn't feel that including this was totally necessary to the story. (forgive me if I am a bit fuzzy on the details it was a number of years ago that I read the book).

Ok...thanks. I think I'll def. do the angel theme instead.

Jenn...I did see your day of the dead posts when searching yesterday but I was thinking with other people's children and the age range, it could be questionable. I'll stick with the safe bet.
