Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ok...so without repeating myself for those that have read my posts ad nauseum about my DS's learning struggles what good Science and/or History can he do relatively independent? I will be working with him extensively with Math and language arts but I don't want to set these other subjects aside (that he had been doing at a co-op but he won't be returning) b/c he loves them both. I love history but not science.      He will be considered 7th grade but reads significantly below grade level so heavily worded texts and/or books that wouldn't be available on audio would be out. Is there something online? Are there some good living books that would be available on audio?

I'm not super worried about history but still would like some options. He kind of needs to be gearing up for high school science in a couple of years so I'm not sure what direction to go to get him ready for Biology, Chemistry, Physics eventually which are the standards in our state. YIKES! Science was always, by far, my weakest subject and yet I think he would love it if I could find a good fit for him.

PS: He's actually said science is one of his favorite subjects but I think that is b/c of the hands-on experiments.

How about Behold & See from CHC? They are intended to be done independently. I would use book 5 or 6. The seventh grade book won't be out until later this year. I'm using them one grade level behind. We used 5 this year and will be using 6 next year. I've been making lessons plans for 6 this week and I think this will be a better book than 5! I would choose which ones covers the topics that he needs to study rather than the grade level.

History? Maybe some Landmark books on whatever subject he wants to cover. The in print books are inexpensive from amazon. My non-history lover did good with those last year. His favorite was one on the American Revolution.

Hi Kathryn,

My struggling learner loved "The Mystery of the Periodic Table" and was able to read it independently albeit slowly. We also got him "The Elements" and "The Elements Treasure Box." This was a hit for us.

For history, I had him read the elementary versions of "The Story of the World" and then included him in audio versions of historical fiction and activities. I just tried to keep the kids together in the same time period.

I have some more hits for science, but I will have to come back later.
