Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dd ending 9th grade. The only comprehensive final she will have is Science (outsourced). Saxon math we just do the weekly tests. The same for geography, and catechism. I didn't want to get caught up in the study for a comprehensive final this year - especially since she is getting that in science. So, as usual, I am starting to question myself. Am a bad for not requiring a comprehensive final in each class? What do you all do.

I don't generally do them. Both my high-schoolers to date have had outside classes in which they've taken finals, plus we do standardized testing per state mandate. That to me is enough for the discipline of studying for and taking comprehensive tests. Otherwise, in coming up with grades, I've formed a picture of the student's engagement with and understanding of the material through conversation and writing and general observation, so that's the basis for the grade I give. I'm much more interested in the process of seeking knowledge as a way of life than I am in the "product" focus of an exam -- I just view test-taking as a life skill one has to acquire and am glad that other venues offer that opportunity.

So no, I don't think you've made a bad decision at all!

Sally
