Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Thinking about this thread, what are some ways you nurture your child's interests and assist them in pursuing their passions?

Ideas, curriculum choices, outside classes or tutors, etc.?

For instance, we tailor our plan of study to a child's field(s) of interest. Our budding scientist loves to read about science, scientists and technology in history, and also makes sure we do lots of experiments, etc. He also receives a lot of science kits as gifts, etc.

Our oldest likes to compose music in his spare time, so we made sure he had great music editing software.

I'd love to hear what you do, both schooly and not so schooly.

Could we also talk about how to discover a child's interest. Mine haven't shown interest in any certain activities.

Well, my eldest is passionate about tornadoes. I chose the Biology year from Noeo science because it started with weather. That was a nice intro to the year, although it didn't quite feed his passion because of how structured it was. We do a lot of US geography, and it reinforces "tornado alley". We have a lot of books in our home library about weather, and we check out more. Also, when we were in MA, we made a special trip to Boston to see the big tornado IMAX film that is the feature of Storm Chasers. Right now he's interested to know that one of our ancestors was in the Civil War. We're studying the major battles w/ my Dad right now, including the one where Alfred died (Antietem).

My middle guy is only just 5. He's obsessed with structures and food. We cook/bake pretty frequently. It's our bonding time, actually. I got him some PVC pipe and fittings(joints) so he can construct random things in the backyard, and we have a fountain pump that I occasionally take out so we can make our own fountain out of random things. He also has his own personal bin of junk (wires, speakers, plastic stuff) for his "machines".

The little guy is more mainstream in his interests: construction and monster trucks. I'm not in a hurry to get to a monster truck rally, but we did park next to a construction site a couple of times just to watch them work. We also drove around a couple of demolition sites just to see them set up (watched the final demo on tv, though).

When I am praying for my kids, I always pray that God will reveal their hidden talents and help us nurture them.
