If a 3rd grade scope & sequence says cover x,y & z, how throughly do you cover that topic? If I were using a traditional boxed curriculum, I would follow the LP, assign the text & workbook, administer the test, send it in or use a red pen to mark all the incorrect answers. Move on to next page.
I really need to read Real Learning don't I?

Jenny, I read it at least twice a year ~ once in the summer when I am gearing up for a new year (and I need to get my focus) and once around Christmas when I need a tuning up. 
It is by far my most valuable home learning tool. If you are looking for a copy, I believe you can get one by going to this Forum's home page; there is a link there to buy it at MacBeth's Opinion.

It's one of the few books I'm taking to Austria for inspiration -- all the other books are school books for the kids I covered my copy with clear contact to protect it but it's pretty well highlighted, annotated and just generally USED!
It is worth every penny, even if you have to buy retail....

You know-I carried my copy everywhere with me (you might call me nuts) and I think I lost it  . I would read, say while the kids were in their karate class or doing something else. I would even take it to the library with me since it had the book lists in the back. I loved reading it and getting snippets here and there when I could. I'm still searching, hoping it's slipped in another tote bag (I have way too many-another topic!)...but so far, no luck. Elizabeth, you might be hearing from me so I could get another!!

Ok, I have yet another question.
How many books do you (not personally) have going?
We are reading our way through The Little House books at night with dad. But the children wanted a read aloud during the day so we picked up Charlottes Web. But I saw so many other that would be great read alouds during the day also, but wondered if there could be too many books going at once? Plus my 2nd grader is starting some independent reading as well.

Hi Jenny!
We always have loads of read alouds and independent readings going on at once. Currently we are reading aloud:
Farmer Boy, for the curriculum Prairie Primer
Heaven to Betsy, our car book
Various Kit books, for our book club
HOOT, with a neighbor girl before attending a Carl Hiaasen signing/movie day at local bookstore beside movie theater since he is a local
Eight Cousins, lunch time read aloud
Kidnapped or Swiss Family Robinson or another sailing book for the evening with dh.
These are the books that I can think of that are currently being read aloud, not counting science, history etc... that are sometimes read aloud, sometimes not, since DD is getting old enough to prefer reading to herself. I hope this is answers your question, giving you an idea of our family's read alouds! We've never had a problem with thinking we have too many books going on but that will be different for each family.
I also am not the only one reading, definitely not the car book as I am driving and the evening books we usually treat like that old time story game where one can stop the story at any point and the next person has to pick it up immediately. Kit she usually reads to me right before club time so I know what is going on before the meeting. HOOT is a brand new one, I am unsure of it but the meeting with the author thing suckered me into it, we will see how it goes, it's got a nice silvery medal on the cover (not that that means much anymore)
Besides, if I am not reading to her, I'd be reading to myself (and probably alot of the same books anyway, as kid's books are so much better than adult's books) and this allows her the time for a craft or art or copywork...

Hoot is one of my son's all-time favorites. He must have read it half a dozen times and was SO excited to hear of the movie. He also loves "Flush," Haisson's newest kids book. Being former Floridians ourselves ds is very familiar with the issues addressed in the books, which is fun for him.

We always have a few going at once. Right now we are reading The Charlotte Years for living history, and The Adventures of Chatterer the Red Squirrel for nature study. Oldest son (who loved Hoot by the way), is currently reading Huck Finn independently. I'd also like to start St. Patrick's Summer sometime soon.

For read-alouds right now we have St Patricks summer for religion, Fabre's Book of Insects and Field Guide to the Familiar for nature study, we are all currently listening to Redwall on tape and ds is listening to Harry Potter 3, dd's ongoing read-aloud is Everyday Graces, and ds is re-reading Hoot and a series of books by Tamora Pierce. We don't currently have an evening read-aloud as the garden is keeping me busy in the eves lately, but usually it is something related to history. Not always. I think we will start A Samurai's Tale next, but Karen E. has me thinking perhaps Caddie Woodlawn.
