Hi everyone!
I had a huge disappointment this week. DD9 has been wishing for a 2nd day for a co-op. She needs that social interaction in a stable environment. I thought I found one, but once I spoke to the lady in charge, I was turned off of the program.
So, after that, I thought, the Lord will guide me where we need to be. Then the thought popped in my head, what if I started a co-op? Maybe a small all girls group, for her. So, google and I met, bickered and debated, and then found the Catholic Schoolhouse.
The feedback on the website is really fantastic, but generally, onsite feedback is. Has anyone tried it?

I haven't used Catholic Schoolhouse, but I started a Classically Catholic Memory co-op this year and we are so please with it! We have about 10 families in our group and we meet once every-other-week.

I have it, but use CCM that Monica just mentioned because the teacher manual has so much more information than just a list to memorize. CCM has activities and more information about the lists, while Catholic Schoolhouse has just lists to memorize. I do really like Catholic Schoolhouse's Art 2 book, though. It can be used alone without purchasing any of their other materials.
God bless,
Christine

Ok, more to consider.
What intrigued me about the Catholic Schoolhouse was the Art and Science.
I am now wondering if we could just use those and make an art and science club, and call it good..lol. Learning but lots of fun.
Now, I am looking at CCM and Schola Rosa for possible things to use.
Any feedback on either one?

I only looked through the Catholic Schoolhouse text last summer at our conference so it was pretty brief and can't recall everything to compare. I am wondering what is most helpful to you, Christine in the CCM teacher manual. I have that text and find that besides the science section with activities and sometimes the history with extended notes, there really isn't much in the teacher notes except "Please use general teaching techniques for ---- on Page ---" - the CCM manual does have a decent intro section with overall teaching helps and ideas that they are referring to but not much sprinkled through in individual weeks except like I mentioned in the science. Is it that section that is helpful - and does Catholic Schoolhouse not have anything like those intro support pages?
In looking at the Catholic Schoolhouse materials online it seems that their separate Art and Science books are really developed and would end up giving significant development in two content areas - which is what I see CCM having as well. I would say that the science book the way it is organized is more ready to go for a lesson plan than CCM's teacher notes, imo. I taught our CCM co-op science last year and often had to supplement. So I think the Catholic Schoolhouse science compares well for development. I will say I like the subject matter concentration in CCM better - focusing on one subject area for the whole year (Life Science one year, Earth Science a different year) whereas Catholic Schoolhouse looks like it takes a single topic from each of the 4 science disciplines and covers it for 6 weeks. Either work - I just prefer the subject concentration.
Having done several different co-ops through the years, I definitely think you can develop a co-op just off the art and science sections. Two content areas in a co-op is sometimes the perfect amount.

Here is a recent thread all on using CCM in a co-op setting (plus a link to past thread as well). Classically Catholic Memory.

I am so torn...lol
There aren't much for samples for CCM, I can't compare the science, as there is only a student manual book, with 2 questions. It doesn't show in the teachers manual.
I like lots of what I do see, I like the idea that CCM it isn't just a list, but I didn't really mind that it wasn't to start with.
Our current day, most of our school time has been Math, LA, Religion. And a much smaller portion of time on social studies, french, art and science, I know sad . She loves science and art, and I feel I need to expand on these. I want to work on her memory, as this will go a long, long way in the future, a great tool.
So I just don't know~
I am leaning toward aiming to do a small group, very specific to dd9 needs. Something we could do from home, so eliminate the extra cost of renting a space, although I think I could get one of the meeting rooms at the parish, but that adds traveling time.
I could do any of them on our own, at home, but she is really wanting to do something with other kids... I know we don't always get what we want, but she so rarely expresses any wants beyond an occasional little treat, and this one is important to address.

It is the science and history extended notes that I like. The science gives details and examples of things to do in regards to what is being memorized. The history goes into a bit more detail than just a list or paragraph. There's even paragraphs to memorize, not just a date or chronological list (though it has those, too).

I totally agree with your assessment here. The Catholic Schoolhouse science is nice, but I like the concentrations in CCM much better. There really is no art subject in CCM, but there is beautiful artwork in the book. I definitely like the Catholic Schoolhouse Art 2 book.
Basically, I like CCM's subject areas, topics covered, etc. better than Catholic Schoolhouse. I also like the format of CCM (the books, maps, and materials are really nice!). The layout of the CCM book is just visually more appealing to me. I really like Catholic Schoolhouse's Art 2 book, though, and would recommend their Science 2 book as well.
God bless,
Christine

We are an active Chapter of CSH (Catholic Schoolhouse) & while I didn't quite understand it at first I find it wonderful now near the end of our 1st year. We started out planning to do CCM but looked over the materials at IHM conference & loved them. I've never been involved with Classical Conversations but our director has for several yrs, thus she was thrilled for Catholic program! Her opinion is that CSH is better than Classical Conv. just by the art & science alone. She teaches the art portion and is a true artist -has her MA in Art. She loves the art.
I teach the Science portion and I can tell you it is in-depth & fun! I am not a science kind of person (Social Science degree here) & sometimes I have to research a bit, but our students (15 total) absolutely love the program. We just built our own rockets & are about to launch them & they are so excited. The dads are all coming out to be part of the launch. When learning the solar system they were so enthralled -much more than if I were just teaching them at home. It is fun to do such subjects in groups. We make games out of the timeline cards by separating the students in 2 teams to see who can put their section of cards in order the quickest. It was AMAZING when the meteorite hit Russia & we had just learned about them in CSH science AND in Geography of those same mountains where it hit. It really brought the learning home to the students. The light came on that, "hey we aren't just learning random things here."
We had a St. Valentine's Day party that was so wonderful and Christ centered. The students loved it. Most of all, several of our really shy students are hopping up to give their presentations. The same students who could barely speak to anyone at first is now laughing and talking with others. My students are very happy when it's Catholic Schoolhouse day.

JKFIO,
Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear how it is working within a co-op.

Bumping bc I'm already contemplating NEXT year... Always thinking ahead..
I commented in this thread over on TWTM forum. (Is it okay to link that? If not, just delete.)
I must say. I was wowed by their CD sample compared to the CCM. And I like the art and music component. I'm contemplating buying just the art next year.
I'm fine with the science we are doing. After 12 years of this, I've come to see all the experiments are pretty much the same. *shrug*
