Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is for those of you who have a curriculum or purchased lesson plans for high school literature. With my oldest I used Seton's lesson plans for literature in high school. I liked their teaching of literature - you know: theme, conflict (man vs. man, man vs nature. . . ). . . But I do not like HAVING to have them grade. WIth my dd (9th grade) we have been using various study guides (currently using progeny press with The Scarlett letter). Its ok - but I am wondering if I keep using various study guides of we will miss some essential things in Literary Analysis. So, Who has used things like Lightening LIt, the excellence in literature series, Total language plus or anything similar. I think maybe using a curriculum or lesson plans like these - we will be more comprehensive in our approach. So, tell me what you all have used and liked or disliked.

Hi Barb,

For ds in 9th this year, we did Windows to the World which I think has given him a great foundation for literary analysis. We fleshed out the year with a few extras from Kolbe's 7th-8th literaure plans. My aim is to keep WTTW as a reference for the rest of HS Lit.

At this stage, we were then looking at doing for 10th and up, a variety of the Progeny Press guides!

I looked at Excellence in Lit, but from what I understand it doesn't really have much teacher help (which is what I need!), as in answer keys or teacher guides. (Correct me anyone if I'm wrong...) It seems to be geared for the independent student, but is of a high standard in terms of lit study.

We've used Lightning Lit in 7th/8th and on the whole have enjoyed using it, but for some reason the HS levels don't seem to get as good reviews. But again, that's just going by what I've heard/read. I just looked at a sample from one of the american lit guides and it has comprehension questions and then a selection of writing exercises. Not sure if on the whole, it systematically addresses things like theme, conflict etc... (Does seem to have a lot of background information though.)

Haven't looked into Total Language Plus.

For ds, I was aiming for something that is meaty enough for lit study, but not necessarily the absolute top of the range - if that makes sense.

For clarity..

Are you not wanting to grade at all, looking for a different grading system, or?

I have used lightening lit, but never their grading services. The selections are good and mostly enjoyed.

I have total language plus American short stories.

I LOVE literary lessons from Lord of the Rings for 9th grade.

ETA: I also have kolbe and did seton. Some other stuff on the shelf that I can't remember off the top right now.
