Well, the good news is we bought a bigger house. The tricky part is that we'll have to spend a month between houses living with family or in hotels. We won't be able to have much with us at this point, so no more piles of picture books! A few, maybe, and a couple of texts, but not much more than that. I figured that little manipulatives will only get lost between moving back and forth. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to do school with not very much stuff? Has anyone done this before?
I have a fourth grader, a second, and one in Kindergarten.

Can you use the library? that would let you have some books and keep them rotated.. without packing and unpacking etc.
Do you have a Kindle for read alouds? You can get the Andrew Lange (?) Fairy books and Beatrix Potter books and such free on the kindle (or free kindle ap on a computer) and that helps a lot with having fewer books but having books to read. Check out any educational type of programming on stations you can get at the hotel.
A bag of dried beans can make very cheap manipulatives for counting and such and if you lose them, not a big deal.
But at those ages.. I'd do some math and lots of reading together and not worry about much other than moving.

If you're using something like Ambleside (or even if you're not but are open to their booklists) for your fourth and second graders, you should be able to access your schoolbooks as etexts, since most of them are free online. The same goes for poetry anthologies, Mother Goose, etc. And you don't have to have a Kindle or Nook--you can definitely just read from a regular computer. Same goes for audiobooks! So for me, that would take care of the bulk of our subjects.
Other than that, I would probably have along our nature journals, a few favorite art supplies, and a binder for each child with their "current work" (poems and songs to learn, copywork pages, etc.). And I would take a break from our math curriculum and just bring along some math drill sheets and some decks of cards for various math games to keep their minds fresh.

I have had to do this!
Honestly, with kids your ages I would strongly consider doing nothing! If I had to pick one subject it would be math. OR, any one thing that brings a little structure or routine to your day. Moving is stressful. I would try to reduce anything that will add to it.

I would visit every park and nature trail around. Play math card games. Have a nice long read aloud or two, maybe Little House series. Do the kids do any handiwork? Maybe have them work on Christmas presents. All that could fit into a nice bag.

Great ideas! You can also tear out some pages in the workbooks, if you have them. I am very excited about your new house!
