Explode the Code books 1 and 1.5--my boys love it.
I've also used this free printable program from Don Potter's site, Word Mastery.

We also use Explode the Code. It is easy and relatively harmless. We also play phonics and sight word games from Struggling Reader. Their website is down right now so I can't post a link. I love these games. We also learn phonics while doing reading lesson.

I use explode the code combined with Little Stories for Little Folks. Works well enough for us for the last 5 kids.

Another Explode the Code lover here...
plus BOB books.
Those two things have made three of my boys essentially teach themselves how to read... very little Mom intervention.

I used the CHC program (? Little Stories for Little Folks?-can't remember the name). It was easy to teach and they were reading easily with no problems.

I highly recommend also Saxon Phonics. Its a great phonics program that really gives a child the tools to read. After I did this program with my oldest, she was reading and spelling higher than her grade level. I am starting the other too from Kinder to 2nd is the program. It has it all from phonics to spelling to decoding. Also if the child needs more help it gives you extra things and it is easy to follow with your children. Anyway, I highly recommend to anyone.
It also includes a tape and video with sounds for the phonics.
Here is a review that gives you a better idea of the program. Saxon Phonics Review

When I'm teaching my kids the letter sounds I've used a few of Maria Montessori's methods: 1) sandpaper letters, and 2) letter bowls. The sandpaper letters: The child traces traces a letter made from sandpaper while saying the sound that letter makes. The letter bowls: There are a certain group of letters for each bowl. You have the letter written on a small piece of paper, then a picture that starts with that sound. The child has to match the beginning sound with the letter that makes that sound. I have checked out a few books from the library about Montessori to help get these things ready and how to do them.
The other thing I've done for phonics is Alphaphonics. I just have the book that has the lessons in it and I sit with the child and do the lesson orally with them. So far, they've caught on really well with the Alphaphonics because I've already done some letter work with them. I think if I hadn't done anything with them, and they were learning the letter sounds as part of the phonics program, it would take longer.
I have a lot of little beginner reading books around for when they start putting it all together. I have the BOB books too.
Charlotte Mason talks specifically about teaching reading in Volume 1( I think?) I've done this too, some sight words and some phonics at the same time using a poem, "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star".

At around 4 or 5 years old, I begin my children with Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. I combine it with Little Angel Readers and workbooks whenever I decide to include it. They are usually done the Little Angel Readers and workbooks by the end of Grade 1.

Yet another Explode the Code fan here! It's going very well, and very easily, for my 6 yo son.
Also thought I would mention, since it hasn't made the list on this thread yet, Superphonics. I believe it's a British program (so I'm finding it's not the easiest to get my hands on it! Bummer! ). But, after looking at about a half-dozen programs, I have really been impressed with this one. It's a 5-workbook series, colorful and very thoughtfully designed to catapult a child right into solid reading skills. It's been a good fit for my son.
